I'm Back! (where have you heard that before)

That's right, I'm back. Supposedly. It's entirely possible, quite possible, perhaps and tentatively, that there's a rumor about the slight inkling I have to, maybe, write in this blog. Really.

I have this thing about not writing when I'm down. I'm not entirely sure why, I think I just hate reading blogs when they're always negative, always talking about NOT doing the something the blogger is normally talking about doing. In the process, my blog entries have consisted entirely of my Twitter activity.

That is, until about a month ago, when LoudTwitter broke unceremoniously, and without announcement. I suppose it's my fault for not noticing, which just goes to show how much I've thought about this blog for the past month. I do apologize.

Shortly after running the Avenue of the Giants Marathon, I started having pains deep within my left hip joint. My first thought, of course, was to take a short break. I took a few days off, and it happened again. So I thought ok, it's my shoes... I had about 350 miles on my shoes at that point, so I went down to buy new ones. They were out of stock.

I thought of buying elsewhere, but realized that if I had them order the shoes and not run at all until then, it would force me to take a break to heal. I did this, but when the shoes came in, I didn't have the money to pay for them. This pushed it out another week, giving me a full two weeks of rest.

When I started running, BAM, the problem occurred again. I went to the doctor, who gave me an xray. After a week and no call, I called his office only to find him saying there was nothing wrong. It's the same old story. My response to them was, "Great, so I'm on my own again?" The doctor then referred me to an orthopedist. :)

A week later at the orthopedist's office, I found out he doubled as a sports medicine doctor as well. Finally, someone who knew what they were doing! He looked at my x-ray for a while, and had a 30-minute talk with me. He wasn't a runner, but didn't have anything against it. The advice he gave me was:

* Take glucosamine (I'd already started by then)
* Take Aleve regularly in almost prescription strength (doubling OTC dose)
* Stretch religously after runs
* Use the foam roller religiously before AND after runs

So the past week I've run the same schedule as Hal Higdon's Intermediate I marathon training program, albeit with less mileage. Am I in pain? Yes, although a bit less (it was already starting to get less when I saw the orthopedist). I'm not sure doing what the doctor told me has helped yet, because I still feel the same. At the same time, recovery is quicker (I'm usually recovered enough to run the next day).

In faith, I registered for the California International Marathon.

The 18-week Hal Higdon training program starts August 3, but the first week starts with 24 miles. Leading up to August 3, I've been slowly building up my mileage to at least that point. I actually managed to run 19 miles this last week! Pain's been managable, so I really think I can do it.

Meanwhile, I picked up a wireless bluetooth headset.

Along with the Palm Pre, I honestly can't believe I managed without it. Seriously, running with a wire either hanging loose or threaded through the arm & neck of my shirt was just not cutting it. The range is great as well, I can put the Pre in my fanny pack while wearing the headset, and make all adjustments remotely! The headset also works to answer the phone, and while the quality for phone calls isn't the greatest, it does work.

So that's where I'm at. I plan on posting regular workouts starting immediately, and want to build up the habit once again. I'm looking forward to it all!

  • 02:21:46: New post on my blog: From Twitter 07-24-2009: 06:11:58: Wt: 177, RHR: 51, BF: 18.2%06:23:19:.. http://bit.ly/11pGFU
  • 08:05:40: Wt: 177, RHR: 48, BF: 17.7%
  • 08:20:46: @Neumen I measure my RHR as soon as I'm mentally able to think about it, right after waking up
  • 08:21:17: @Neumen I usually have to take it a few times, because my wife will toss & turn and make the bed bounce, raising my HR a bit hehe
  • 08:22:02: @Neumen Those HR watches with the finger sensors suck for exercise but work great for a morning HR, it beats wearing a strap al lnight
  • 08:22:28: This morning I set my alarm and was going to run at 6am. I just got out of bed, I don't think I'm gonna make it.
  • 08:24:24: RT @gabeanzelini: @rt3rmin nice.... I added a biblegateway search provider to the browser dropdown from sctratch #pre - great idea! which 1?
  • 08:26:59: @Neumen How do they not apply to you, do you mean for training zones? Because zones are very person-specific, charts are very general
  • 08:28:06: @Neumen Don't forget about perceived effort. If you run and feel like you're about to die but your HR is 140, then adjust accordingly
  • 08:28:53: @Neumen Like for me, I don't feel like I'm getting a "good" workout until above 150, I try to keep between 155 & 160 when I'm "working hard"
  • 08:29:41: @Neumen If I go with the 65-85 thing I should be around 145, the only problem is that I'm running about 12 min/mi if I do that
  • 08:31:23: @Neumen I tend more to wear it not for training zones, but to track calories burned. I'd probably be better off using it for training.
  • 08:37:15: @Neumen If your HRM is anything like mine though, it takes about a mile to "warm up". Mine usually shows 200 when I just start
  • 08:37:36: @Neumen Which is in no way accurate :)
  • 08:39:17: @DonGeronimoShow I'm Don Geronimo and you're not. Generalissimo Frederico Franco is still dead, goodnight and have a pleasant tomorrow.
  • 08:39:48: @Neumen Is yours the strap for the 305? If so, wear it all night sometime and see what the chart looks like.
  • 08:49:11: @Neumen Does the 405 track running while in sleep mode? If there's data going to it, it should still track.
  • 08:49:24: @smellycents See? Lush!
  • 08:49:41: @smellycents You & @TLM26, I'm tellin ya
  • 08:50:24: @ironbrandon Do you listen to iRun the Running Show? Ray Zahab casually mentioned he runs 14k a week barefoot hehehe
  • 08:50:47: @ironbrandon I just can't imaging it. That ground is hard.
  • 08:51:08: @ironbrandon As my mom put it, I'm like the princess & the pea, I haven't been able to even walk barefoot since I was about 7
  • 08:51:17: outside anyway
  • 08:51:35: RT @jhartikainen: I hope Palm integrates MSN to #Pre, like it has done w/ AIM and GTalk - I agree
  • 08:52:11: @jhartikainen They probably need an agreement with MS, they had MSN integration in the Treo 755p (not constant login though)
  • 08:52:45: @LinkedInBrian It's not #Sprint's fault per-se, it's the cell phone industry's fault. They unequivocally screw longtime customers.
  • 08:54:55: @ironbrandon I could handle that, or the grass, but not on asphalt or cement, gahh
  • 08:55:35: @smellycents You ran 185 miles? (I know the answer to that one)
  • 08:56:07: @sharkims Move them around. If you hold your finger on an icon until it highlights, you can drag it to any page @palm #pre
  • 08:59:06: @Neumen No, he means barefoot.
  • 09:00:19: @innismir I've found porting #'s take 15 to 20 minutes. They tell you 2-4 hours in case something happens (as with anything else)
  • 09:02:00: @fridayluv thanks for the Saturday #ff love :)
  • 09:02:52: Alright, I'm off to run 5 miles. In shoes.
  • 10:30:44: Ran 5.1 miles on RunSaturday - http://www.runsaturday.com/tabId/64/activityId/115746/Default.aspx
  • 10:38:24: Leave it to Mapmyrun.com to break not only their importer, but the export to Twitter as well.
  • 10:40:45: OK, off to the shower.
  • 11:07:34: @Skittlesdfw It likely works like the old mind control Atari 2600 controller
  • 11:10:42: Off to the potluck/BBQ. Wish me luck! ;)
  • 11:15:53: False alarm, my wife is making muffins that won't be done for another 5 or 10 minutes
  • 11:16:49: @ginaharris1 Thanks, it was a perfect day for it. I didn't feel any pain during and did a good amount of stretching after, plus foam roller
  • 11:17:01: @ginaharris1 About 20 minutes later I felt it, not too bad though
  • 11:17:25: @Skittlesdfw Hey when's the Lost panel?
  • 13:37:29: @chuq You sound like me, I love the end results but never want to make blog entries hehe
  • 13:42:02: @AnnRan5 I want to take the kids but no $. Sucks to be us! Hehehe
  • 13:49:44: @Ali_Sweeney With Twitter you're converting the daytime drama crowd to fitness junkies, Jillian will be proud!
  • 14:03:25: @Neumen @smellycents I do, but anyone who knows me knows I'd do that w/o social networks anyway. It's part of who I am.
  • 14:13:11: @leggersheri Gadgets. They're a thing of beauty.
  • 14:24:32: @smellycents I'm a Borg runner. Resistance is futile.

  • 21:07:47: @mchwang Hey, have you been able to turn off the wi-fi tether & re-enable standard wi-fi without a reboot? @palm #pre
  • 21:27:04: @MarthaVan Listen, when the deposed king of Nigeria asks for money, you respond!
  • 21:31:16: Well this bites, I had just assumed Dish Network would have carried BBCA in HD once it went live. I was sorely mistaken. :(
  • 21:59:49: RT @coachpenguin NEW blog post: Being A Running Coach Doesnt Mean You Have to Be Perfect, http://digg.com/d3ybbn?t - everyone digg it up!
  • 22:04:32: @coachpenguin you won't be dugg much tho... your blog's not technology oriented
  • 22:10:46: RT @alyankovic: http://twitpic.com/bo6gl - Objet d'art du jour - I want one! hehehe
  • 22:13:30: @ginaharris1 Since I just watched 1? NO! :)
  • 22:20:10: @ginaharris1 You know, it aired a while ago. If I get spoiled it's my own fault, but I do try to avoid it if possible hehe
  • 22:30:34: @ginaharris1 I just haven't watched TV in a week or so. I wanted to watch a couple episodes in a row but my wife was ready for bed
  • 22:31:10: @ginaharris1 I was exhausted so I took a 3-hour nap late in the day (5:30pm). Well now I'm wide awake. :)
  • 22:37:22: Tron Scherzo &#266B; http://blip.fm/~ambwv
  • 22:41:21: @sam2579 That made no sense. :)
  • 22:44:51: @sam2579 What @Paulone was saying. There were so many abbreviations that the meaning was completely lost.
  • 22:48:21: @sam2579 Have you tried #Twee? I think it's better than #Spaz personally.
  • 22:51:14: @sam2579 ah ok
  • 22:51:42: @RobertCristie It may be a fear, but at least you remember the most important part.
  • 22:54:34: @sam2579 #Twee's getting there, it's missing features that others need but I don't. I was preferring Spaz but have gravitated towards Twee
  • 22:54:58: @sam2579 Tweed has both of them on speed. It's fast, I usually run it to send a quick tweet & not linger

  • 06:23:19: @blackfonzie I was thinking this while listening to Shock of the News... all that positive affirmation works, Stuart Smalley's a senator now
  • 06:24:06: @TankaBar_Linda Thank you, I'll have to check REI.
  • 07:44:12: @addiarmadar No hotter than downloading any other 87MB file!
  • 07:44:33: Good morning, my fine, fine friends.
  • 07:47:49: @cocoacast Again... this cross-platform lib manager exists that most people already have. Why invent the wheel, why not make it easy on ppl?
  • 07:51:41: @Bootsy_Collins They just intensified the funk of us survivors
  • 07:52:29: @cocoacast Personally, I hate iTunes, but since they have the podcast database what can you do. #pre
  • 07:53:21: @cyktrussell well that's a new one. Checking out the article. Maybe they should put cancer warnings on slim jims & bratwurst too
  • 08:06:41: Name that film! &#266B; http://blip.fm/~aiz28
  • 08:07:13: RT @gchance: Name that film! &#266B; http://blip.fm/~aiz28 - of course the second someone clicks it they'll know hehehe
  • 08:16:20: @kchealy Oh no! Glad to hear you're ok. You pulled a me.
  • 08:20:53: Emerson, Lake, & Powell, "Touch and Go" &#266B; http://blip.fm/~aj031
  • 08:21:26: @kchealy As I said, you pulled a me. I fall a lot no matter what I do. Just sitting in my chair, I fall on occasion.
  • 08:22:56: @OTD_Colonel @cyktrussell I suppose there's a level of craziness that people should really disallow themselves from going beyond.
  • 08:24:59: @blackfonzie Snausages!

  • 08:41:18: @blackfonzie IT'S BACON!
  • 08:46:33: @blackfonzie Are you trying to have a real discussion about sausages, or just slip it in somewhere?
  • 08:47:31: @blackfonzie If you're frustrated and someone asks what you've tried, there's your entry point. Slip into Scotty accent and say...
  • 08:47:59: @blackfonzie "I tried shovin' a sausage into the warp drive, but it diddna do a bi' a' good."
  • 08:48:45: @blackfonzie "By the way, would you happen to have a we bi' a' mustard up there on the bridge?" "Analysis, Spock?"
  • 08:49:02: @blackfonzie "It would appear Mr. Scott is about to eat a hot dog without mustard, Captain."
  • 08:58:37: All your sausage are belong to us.
  • 09:13:52: Pink Floyd, "Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast" &#266B; http://blip.fm/~aj3kt
  • 09:21:12: @cocoacast Yes, but why? It already exists, it doesn't need to be reinvented. I use iTunes to download podcasts but don't sync with it.
  • 09:39:27: @TimBorb 5:15 is a good tune but it's better if you listen to it in context (within the Quadrophenia album)
  • 09:55:18: @eveblackorwhite good morning girlie
  • 09:58:26: @MannyPR It always works for me as well, iTunes sync may have broke, but remember I don't sync with iTunes. I sync with iTunes Agent.
  • 09:59:14: @MannyPR I do think, however, that they're going to be in a heap of trouble with the method they used (using Apple's USB ID)
  • 10:20:37: @MannyPR That's right! Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah! #pre Double waaaaaaaah!
  • 10:47:20: @cocoacast An RSS reader doesn't search the itunes database. I used an RSS reader on the Treo because it didn't open as a volume
  • 10:47:31: @cocoacast Otherwise I would have done the same thing I'm doing right now.
  • 11:02:30: @cocoacast There's that reinvention of the wheel thing again. Perhaps they want to focus on the more important things, like EAS
  • 11:16:22: @cocoacast Free but not open source. That's why iTunes isn't on the #pre.
  • 11:39:28: @bucksommerkamp It's just in too-heavy rotation everywhere. If I listen to classic rock stations I hear it constantly.
  • 11:40:22: @zachtib unbricked?
  • 11:40:34: @zachtib how did you brick your #pre?
  • 12:01:09: @alitherunner bah dah dah!
  • 12:01:46: @bucksommerkamp Very likely. You gotta hand it to Aerosmith, each decade for a while they've found something to renew their fanbase
  • 12:02:12: @bucksommerkamp in the 80s it was Walk This Way with Run DMC
  • 12:02:37: @bucksommerkamp in the 90s it was Steven Tyler in drag for Dude Looks Like a Lady :P
  • 12:04:19: @MacStainless 142 HD hours droooooooooollllllllllllll. Wish I could get one, but sadly no cable card in Dish boxes.
  • 12:17:49: @alitherunner When I hear that song I think of this scene... good times. http://bit.ly/jNqyC
  • 12:23:26: @MacStainless It's one of those things. Can the Series 3 HD files from Tivo-2-Go be stripped of DRM?
  • 12:29:42: @ManMadeMoon How about a chick flick about the love between a race car driver and a high society call girl?
  • 13:43:28: @Adora I have to try the terminal. I've been using an ajax one but it sucks & doesn't retain a PATH, cd doesn't work either :)
  • 13:50:42: @disneyrunner Like! See, if this were Facebook I'd give you a thumbs up, but here I can just say LIKE. So... like!
  • 14:09:52: @Adora Got the #pre terminal running, but it's not perfect. Better than the AJAX one though!
  • 14:26:16: @Skittlesdfw Are you at a "comic book" conference by chance?
  • 15:54:55: @TLM26 @marathonmaritza LOOK OUT!!!! Eric Bana's holding on for dear life, he's about to fall off that building!
  • 15:55:29: @cyberpenguin @TLM26 @marathonmaritza I wanted to see it, but now? It looks like a romance novel, no thanks.
  • 15:58:56: @smellycents Holy cow! I turned down something like that last night.
  • 15:59:24: @cyberpenguin Thank you for reminding me I've been on Twitter for 8 months!
  • 16:06:46: @keeponrunning endlessly parsing searches?
  • 16:21:31: @cyberpenguin It just outlines the fact that people come & go on Twitter when someone here for 8 months is a veteran
  • 16:22:09: @TLM26 @cyberpenguin @marathonmaritza I had no idea it was a romance novel! People don't tend to describe it as such.
  • 16:24:13: @TLM26 @cyberpenguin @marathonmaritza I only heard about it when people compared the Journeyman tv show to it
  • 16:46:35: @cyberpenguin That's what I'm getting at. :) If you look though I've had an account probably that long
  • 16:46:41: @cyberpenguin but I didn't use it until last year
  • 16:51:51: @RunningHoosier I was looking for when I set up the account though :)
  • 16:52:29: @RunningHoosier it doesn't seem to show sign-up date
  • 16:56:11: @cyberpenguin You don't. What is wrong with you?
  • 17:00:01: @cyberpenguin It certanly wasn't a good thing. My best friend died and I was going to all the networks he frequented to tell his friends
  • 17:00:27: @cyberpenguin and I knew some friends of his where he used to live in WA were on Twitter, so if I could get to one or two of them
  • 17:00:44: @cyberpenguin then they could spread the word to his real life friends (which they did, we still follow each other too)
  • 17:01:10: @cyberpenguin I'm sure you'd remember me talking about him, Jim basically died of morbid obesity
  • 17:04:46: This is bad. Loudtwitter died a month ago and I didn't know, so none of my tweets have been going to my blog. D'OH.
  • 17:07:10: Speaking of following Jim's friends, how's it going, @onthefritz? :)
  • 17:08:43: Well, I found Twittinesis is a good replacement for LoudTwitter, but you can't schedule the post. So I get to wait.
  • 17:09:04: Meantime, it just goes to show that I need to resume blogging.
  • 17:10:09: @cyberpenguin Like everything else, I either don't have the time, or don't feel like it. I can't write without concentrating on it anymore.
  • 17:18:24: @karrock @cyberpenguin @TLM26 @marathonmaritza I looked on amazon.com and the book is decidedly not romancenovelesque. It's just ppls feet
  • 22:21:22: @MacStainless Re: DRM, I have an app to strip DRM from the SD tivo, didn't know if it worked on the HD version. Cool.
  • 22:21:41: @eveblackorwhite 5 hours later, I say good evening back
  • 22:23:19: @lannies You got the laminated nutrition facts too, eh? What's your standard meal?
  • 22:24:29: @RunningHoosier For first tweets, Twitter now only allows you to go 3200 tweets back. I'm well over 16k now. :)
  • 22:53:31: Too lively for my taste tonight! 5 miles tomorrow morning. Later.
