I would have run in the evening, but a funny thing happened. As I was leaving work, I got a phone call from none other than my brother Terry! I've talked to him a few times over the past couple of years, but I hadn't seen him in person since my wedding in 2001. Come to find out, he was in Woodland, and wanted to know if I'd be home, because he'd like to visit.

So when I got into town, I picked up my wife and went to my mom's house, where we got to visit Terry for a few hours. I got a chance to update him on my hiking & running adventures, while he told me about getting his life back in order and "coming out of the cloud" as he put it. It was nice.

The this morning, I got up and felt soreness in my upper body the likes of which I haven't felt in a long, long time. I've definitely been out of it! I'm writing this shortly after midnight, and my left arm is still so stiff it's difficult to move. I keep telling myself, keep it up, it'll only be this way a short while.

This afternoon was an "all class reunion" for Live Oak High School, which basically means the graduating classes are so small, they just have a reunion for all alumni. I went to see if perhaps I could run into some people from school, but man, nobody there had graduated after 1972! I graduated in 1987. Most people graduated between 1942 and 1960, so other than the people vending refreshments, my wife and I were the youngest ones there. Strange, to be sure.

I did get a chance to walk around the school and see many of my old haunts. Most of the classrooms and areas were open, so I showed my wife around. Not a lot's changed, a few classes have been moved around. The biggest change was the restoral of the music program. Before I got to high school, for budgetary purposes they had eliminated the music program completely, and the music room was turned into a typing lab which later became the Apple IIe computer lab. Back to its former glory, the school band was there playing music for everyone, which I found to be pretty cool.

I went to the gymnasium, and got to walk through the boy's locker room. The picture of Jack Nicholson from The Shining was still on the wall in the equipment cage! Behind the gym, I got to tell my wife once again about the endless laps I had to run around the perimeter. Nope, the track wasn't good enough, we had to run around the grass.

You know how usually when you visit a place you frequented as a kid, everything looks much smaller? This looked bigger, I'm not sure if the high school expanded it at some point or what, but it was about 3 times bigger than I remember it to be.

After about an hour and a half at the high school, we left and went to see Terminator Salvation. It's not too bad a movie, and I got a kick out of the Schwarzenegger "cameo". They did a heck of a job doing the impossible: a cameo not only of a person who didn't even act in the film, but who needed to appear the same way he did in 1984. I was impressed!

Then tonight I ran 5 miles.

Splits
Mile 1: 9:41
Mile 2: 9:29
Mile 3: 9:49
Mile 4: 9:30
Mile 5: 9:13
.09 mi: 0:49 (9:25/mi)

My splits were a lot more consistent tonight than last time around, and I felt much better afterwards. Now it's a matter of being consistent over the next few months before marathon training officially kicks off.
