3 miles yesterday, rest today

I didn't get a chance to post yesterday, but that happens. Ran 3 miles yesterday but was REALLY feeling it in the hip. Oddly enough, stretching helped tremendously and pain was minimal the rest of the day.

I seem to be getting back to normal, bit by bit.

Splits
Mile 1: 9:12
Mile 2: 9:02
Mile 3: 9:37

And today was a rest day, which after the soreness was certainly welcome. I also have a funny story.

There's a new product on the market called Action Wipes. They're designed as an all natural way to clean up when active, whether you do sports or just sweaty from driving a while. :) The woman who created them is named Martha Van Inwegen, and I follow her on Twitter.

There's also a longtime author who used to edit Runner's World, named Bart Yasso. Martha was at an event, talking to Bart, and I joked on Twitter that she should have him autograph a single-serving pack of Action Wipes. Ha-ha, that was that.

So yesterday I opened the mailbox to find she'd sent me a package:

You got it, she sent me a bunch of Action Wipes, two of which were autographed by Bart Yasso. The caption reads, "Greg, never limit where running can take you. Bart Yasso". What a hoot! I was laughing for about 10 minutes on that one.

Anyway, tomorrow's a 5-mile run in the morning, and a 5-mile hike to a 10k peak! Big, busy day. Have a good evening!

5 miles

I've been trying to keep the Hal Higdon schedule leading up to the start of training, even though I'm not keeping the same mileage. Today was 5 miles.

I purposely kept a slower pace than yesterday in an attempt not to overdo it and find myself in pain, and it seems to be working.

Splits
Mile 1: 9:17
Mile 2: 9:35
Mile 3: 10:11
Mile 4: 10:33
Mile 5: 11:37

51:15, 10:14/mi, 777 calories burned

Here's something neat. The last mile would have looked a lot more like Mile 4 if it hadn't been for a guy on a bike who stopped me. I've waved and said a few words to him in the past, he seems to ride at the same time as my lunchtime runs. An older gentleman, in his 70s, he was wondering where I'd been. I told him about my injuries, and the fact that for a while I was running at night rather than at lunch.

Anyway, he told me he'd seen me about a half hour ago, and recognized me because of the way I run. The way I run? So does this mean he recognized the guy running like a dork and knew it was me?

I walked the last half mile or so back to work as a cooldown, and once back did 15 minutes of stretching and the foam roller on both IT bands.

Looking forward to highlighting workouts next week. :)

Great run - 3.1 miles!!!

It's been a long time since I had a run this good. I certainly haven't run this well since the marathon... no, prior to the marathon. Even when I ran the Zoo Zoom, which was a 5k, I didn't run as well.

Notice I didn't say faster. I was a minute slower than the Zoo Zoom, but I felt BETTER. The Zoo Zoom was a struggle from beginning to end, and I think that was the beginning of my downward spiral into what ultimately became of my running. Today's run, in the heat, huffing & puffing to the best of my ability, was enjoyable.

My goal for the day was to run as well as I could to see if indeed I was getting over whatever the problem in my hip joint is, or if it was in my mind. I think I'm ready to start training next week.

Splits
Mile 1: 8:53.42
Mile 2: 8:50.13
Mile 3: 9:31.12
0.1 mi: 1:01.59 (9:58/mi)

3.1 miles (5k), 9:07/mi(!), 28:16, 451 calories burned

I walked the last quarter mile back to work. Today I felt I could do no wrong. I love when great runs happen.

  • 08:34:56: @cyberpenguin @karrock Sadly no, I never had a poster. But regardless, my wife wouldn't go for having the poster on our bedroom wall.
  • 08:35:16: @cyberpenguin @karrock I watched Tron yesterday with my son, my wife told me she'd never seen it... but took a nap with our daughter
  • 08:35:43: @cyberpenguin @karrock So she STILL hasn't seen it. Yet one of the selling points in our relationship early on was she was a sci-fi fan
  • 08:35:52: I want my money back. ;)
  • 08:41:04: @karrock It's my fault I suppose. This was my first viewing of Tron since before we got together, and we've been married almost 8 yrs
  • 08:41:15: @karrock ACK! Almost 9. April will be 9 years.
  • 08:42:01: @cyberpenguin @karrock More like, she "likes sci-fi". Or, "She liked that movie with the beeping short robot and the big hairy guy."
  • 08:43:34: @karrock I am happy to say though that I turned her onto Highlander. Sad to say that she sees nothing wrong with the Sickening.
  • 08:49:24: @cyberpenguin She did say she had a crush on Luke Skywalker as a kid
  • 08:49:47: @cyberpenguin @karrock I will say this though... 85% of the time when we watch TV together, we watch sci-fi.
  • 08:51:52: @karrock @cyberpenguin As I said, I watched it yesterday with my son, but my wife opted to take a nap with my daughter instead.

  • 08:54:31: @karrock sci-fi enough. My wife does like BttF.
  • 08:54:56: @karrock I'm still pissed Old Biff was able to get back to his future though ;)
  • 08:57:48: @karrock I didn't have a problem with the dark alternate '85, although I wouldn't think alt-Biff's involvement would affect the whole world
  • 08:58:00: @karrock it certainly didn't affect the bum
  • 09:05:08: @karrock We did see the clip of Biff's meteoric rise of course. All that stuff would have at least had a pop culture effect

  • 09:05:33: @karrock wasn't Biff testifying to congress or something to legalize gambling?

  • 09:12:31: @karrock I don't think it's the same exact van. Same type though.
  • 09:12:55: @cyberpenguin @karrock That's where The Time Traveler's Wife will come in handy, I just realized
  • 09:14:34: @karrock @blackfonzie By the way, Red the Bum's not the only person who didn't change. Marty's uncle still went to prison.
  • 09:17:19: @karrock Then again, that van WAS dead for almost 30 years when Hurley resurrected it. Them things got stayin' power.
  • 09:18:35: @ginaharris1 @alitherunner I just run the lights, screw 'em.
  • 09:19:32: @blackfonzie @karrock He was hoping to hit him in the head, or maybe knock the gun out of his hand. He had to try SOMETHING.

  • 09:32:07: @eveblackorwhite Yup, that's one of the series' strongpoints although I think it's what weighs it down. Situations get worse & worse
  • 09:32:20: @eveblackorwhite and realistically since there's no way to fix it, it just gets worse
  • 09:33:12: @eveblackorwhite Nope, haven't seen either one
  • 09:34:02: @alitherunner I don't worry about the homeless as much as I do stray animals
  • 09:36:56: @alitherunner the thing is, you have to do something. People will say "oh you're running where it's dangerous" or "how can you run at 4am"
  • 09:37:14: @alitherunner But if you're going to run, you have to do it when you can do it. Sometimes you don't have a choice, so you take precautions.
  • 09:37:37: @karrock ah ok I thought you were just really really into BttF :)

I'm Back! (where have you heard that before)

That's right, I'm back. Supposedly. It's entirely possible, quite possible, perhaps and tentatively, that there's a rumor about the slight inkling I have to, maybe, write in this blog. Really.

I have this thing about not writing when I'm down. I'm not entirely sure why, I think I just hate reading blogs when they're always negative, always talking about NOT doing the something the blogger is normally talking about doing. In the process, my blog entries have consisted entirely of my Twitter activity.

That is, until about a month ago, when LoudTwitter broke unceremoniously, and without announcement. I suppose it's my fault for not noticing, which just goes to show how much I've thought about this blog for the past month. I do apologize.

Shortly after running the Avenue of the Giants Marathon, I started having pains deep within my left hip joint. My first thought, of course, was to take a short break. I took a few days off, and it happened again. So I thought ok, it's my shoes... I had about 350 miles on my shoes at that point, so I went down to buy new ones. They were out of stock.

I thought of buying elsewhere, but realized that if I had them order the shoes and not run at all until then, it would force me to take a break to heal. I did this, but when the shoes came in, I didn't have the money to pay for them. This pushed it out another week, giving me a full two weeks of rest.

When I started running, BAM, the problem occurred again. I went to the doctor, who gave me an xray. After a week and no call, I called his office only to find him saying there was nothing wrong. It's the same old story. My response to them was, "Great, so I'm on my own again?" The doctor then referred me to an orthopedist. :)

A week later at the orthopedist's office, I found out he doubled as a sports medicine doctor as well. Finally, someone who knew what they were doing! He looked at my x-ray for a while, and had a 30-minute talk with me. He wasn't a runner, but didn't have anything against it. The advice he gave me was:

* Take glucosamine (I'd already started by then)
* Take Aleve regularly in almost prescription strength (doubling OTC dose)
* Stretch religously after runs
* Use the foam roller religiously before AND after runs

So the past week I've run the same schedule as Hal Higdon's Intermediate I marathon training program, albeit with less mileage. Am I in pain? Yes, although a bit less (it was already starting to get less when I saw the orthopedist). I'm not sure doing what the doctor told me has helped yet, because I still feel the same. At the same time, recovery is quicker (I'm usually recovered enough to run the next day).

In faith, I registered for the California International Marathon.

The 18-week Hal Higdon training program starts August 3, but the first week starts with 24 miles. Leading up to August 3, I've been slowly building up my mileage to at least that point. I actually managed to run 19 miles this last week! Pain's been managable, so I really think I can do it.

Meanwhile, I picked up a wireless bluetooth headset.

Along with the Palm Pre, I honestly can't believe I managed without it. Seriously, running with a wire either hanging loose or threaded through the arm & neck of my shirt was just not cutting it. The range is great as well, I can put the Pre in my fanny pack while wearing the headset, and make all adjustments remotely! The headset also works to answer the phone, and while the quality for phone calls isn't the greatest, it does work.

So that's where I'm at. I plan on posting regular workouts starting immediately, and want to build up the habit once again. I'm looking forward to it all!
