Running Vlog #21: CIM Training Week 7

CIM Training Week 7, Day 7: 10-Mile Taper Long Run

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!

Well, it's not that bad. In fact, I'm quite happy. Today's 10-mile long run means there are no more long runs before CIM. I only have 9 more training runs in 3 sessions before the big day.

I was lamenting after today's run, because my pace wasn't that great. That said, there were a few reasons for being slower, starting with having to wait on a train. In all the runs I've taken on the route I ran today, I've never had to wait for a train on those tracks! Luck, I guess.

Then there was the wind. This morning it wasn't as bad as it was yesterday, but it was bad enough. Speaking of yesterday, KXTV news today said that out at Sacramento Metro Airport the wind was 60mph! I'm guessing the 25mph forecast on AccuWeather yesterday was correct.

Anyway, back to the run. Overall, it wasn't all that bad.

Tomorrow's my day off from running, and I really don't mind. I think I could completely count next week as rest, but you know what I mean.

CIM Training Week 7, Day 6: 3 taper miles

What's a taper mile? Heck, I dunno, but that's what I'm callin' 'em. I'm in taper mode, right? End of the 2nd week, in the shorter runs, all that jazz.

Anyway, today was a scheduled 3-mile run, and as I promised my son on Thursday's run, I took him with me. Since it had rained yesterday, I didn't want to have him ride through the puddles and cover himself in cold mud, so I ran down Skyway behind the airport.

When I woke up this morning, AccuWeather was claiming 25mph winds outside. 25mph! So I put off the run until about 10:30, but the wind hadn't died down at all. According to Sporttracks, the wind was only 8mph, but I don't care, 8 or 25, it was windy, and tough going. On a few occasions, my son completely stopped riding because he simply wasn't pedaling heavy enough to cut through the wind. In fact, Mile 3 is significantly slower due to having to stop completely to wait for him to catch up. Gotta love it!

Mile 2: 9:28
Mile 3: 10:32

Now, tomorrow... tomorrow's my final long run, leaving exactly 7 days until the California International Marathon. One week! Nervous much? I'm being repeatedly assured that the marathon will go well, I'm just a bit nervous. Only 9 miles to run during the week until the big day.

And so it goes.

CIM Training Week 7, Day 4: 3 taper miles

Happy Thanksgiving! I had thought about running a Turkey Trot a few months ago, but with the Califoria International Marathon looming in a week and a half, I decided not to. I still had a run to do, so I went out with my son this morning, me on foot, he on the bike.

He had a blast, but ended up falling twice. He also had trouble going up & over the raised railroad tracks, and got slowed when we had to stop to wait for traffic crossing the street. Obviously I wasn't going to break any speed records today, but had a nice time with my son for a half hour or so.

The rest of the day was a typical Thanksgiving. We took a nap after my run, then did some baking and went to Grandma's house, where we had dinner. I played Battleship with my son, and when we got home, we put the kids to bed.

The countdown for CIM continues! I'm not entirely sure how I'll deal with next week's reduced mileage for taper week 3. It should be interesting. :)

CIM Training Week 7, Day 3: 5 taper miles

So today wasn't as fast as yesterday. That's ok, it was partially by design because I don't want to overdo it during taper, and partially because I was just a bit lazy. :) I also stopped about a mile and a half in to take pictures of some dogs I'd been thinking about taking a picture of for a while.

There's a house that has a wooden playground in the backyard, and these dogs, crafty creatures they are, love to watch the people and traffic. So they climb to the top of the playground and bark at me as I run.

That made Mile 2 a little slower than the rest, but it still wasn't too bad in the end.

Tomorrow's Thanksgiving, but I'm not worried about it. That's a good thing! I've lost 12 pounds since October, and I'm not about to throw it away on account of a pumpkin pie. :)

CIM Training Week 7, Day 2: 3 taper miles

Today was my birthday, and I was expecting an uneventful day. That's usually how my birthdays go, and today was my 40th, but I didn't really expect anything different.

I was pleasantly surprised, although many things weren't intentional. A lot of small things happened today that made the whole day good.

* A video recorder app was released in Alpha testing for the Pre, called Precorder. It seems to work pretty well, although I don't think I'll be able to run with the phone as a camera. In landscape mode, it's too easy to drop the phone.

* Birthday greetings rolled in all day long on Facebook, and as of 9:30pm, I count 61 greetings. That one made me happy!

* Sam McManus from the Sacramento Bee blogged about my CIM video. This totally surprised me, and now the video has almost 100 views. Pretty cool!

* Speaking of CIM, they posted the confirmed entries today. I'm bib #1131.

* Finally, I ran 3 miles, and it went AMAZINGLY well. I just wish I could run that well for more than such a short run!

Splits
Mile 1: 8:01
Mile 2: 8:28
Mile 3: 8:25

3 miles, 24:55, 8:18/mi average, 335 calories burned

* Then to top it off, I had a wonderful dinner with my wife at the Ranch House, where we had halibut with broccoli. Great stuff!

So my 40th birthday came to a close. It was much better than most of my birthdays have been lately, to be sure!

CIM Course Preview

Since I didn't do my long run on Saturday, I didn't make a vlog this week. I did make a video though, and while I wasn't running, I was editing it together.

On Saturday, I drove up to Folsom, and with the family & Flip in tow, took video of the CIM route! It makes for a great visualization tool.

So here it is.

CIM Training Week 7, Day 1: 6 taper miles

Today was supposed to be my day off, but yesterday's long run went out the window when the 3/5 of my family turned up sick. I made the decision to stay home so my wife could rest, so I decided to make up the mileage during this week.

As a result, my rest day came early, and I had a great run today! Combine that with my new shoes, and I was a happy man.

Splits
Mile 1: 8:57
Mile 2: 8:58
Mile 3: 9:28
Mile 4: 9:03
Mile 5: 9:26
Mile 6: 9:17

6 miles, 55:09, 9:12/mi average, 659 calories burned

This also marks the beginning of Week 2 of the taper, but with missing yesterday's long run, I think I'll end up with a lot more mileage than originally planned. Still, with shorter mileage per day, I should be ok.

One last thing: I ran 6 miles today and didn't think much of it, but on the way home from work I realized I hadn't worn KT Tape! I'm starting to think I'm pretty much recovered from the ankle injury, but I'm also thinking I'm going to wear it for CIM just in case.

CIM Training Week 6, Day 4: 5 Miles

Yesterday after work, using the CIM route posted by the Sacramento Bee the other day, I drove the CIM route. Those hills at the beginning are scary! It's going to be an interesting race. There was so much traffic though, it took me over an hour to drive the whole thing. I was trying to take video, but I ran out of space on the Flip about 2 miles before the end.

I'm planning to go back on Saturday and drive it again during the day when there's more light, and less cars.

I slowed it down a bit today, and managed pretty even splits all around. Most importantly, I've earned a day of rest! (and there was much rejoicing - yay)

CIM Training Week 6, Day 2: 5 Miles

Today was decent, nothing too dramatic happened other than being tired during my run. I managed to keep around 9:15/mi consistently throughout. I forgot my Garmin strap, so I reverted to the Reebok HRM.

After telling people in Twitter that eventually I'd get a jaywalking ticket, I almost got myself hit by a Sheriff's car! He just looked at me as he went on by while I waved. Close call. :)

The rain arrived just after I got home from work and is supposed to be here for a few days, so it looks like I get to practice what I've been preaching and do some rainy day runs! It's been since last year, so it should be interesting.

Until then...

CIM Training Week 5, Day 7: 20 Miles

Today was the 20-miler that I built into my revised, post-injury training schedule. It's not been an easy road.

There are 18 weeks in the Hal Higdon Intermediate I training program. I timed it to coincide with 18 weeks prior to the California International Marathon, including the taper. Then, 4 weeks into training, I was running a 6-miler when I twisted my ankle slightly and landed on my knees & hands.

At first, I thought my knees were the worst of it. Indeed, my left knee still isn't completely healed and has a nasty scar on it. Later that day, however, I found I was hurt more than I first expected, so I took a week off. For good measure, I had it x-rayed and was told nothing was broken.

Almost a week later I was walking in the yard when I stepped in a hole that was dug by the dog. Within seconds, my ankle swelled up to about 4 times its size. My first thought was, "No! CIM!"

So I started to play the waiting game. I had the ankle x-rayed yet again, and once again the doctor told me it was just a sprain. A major sprain, but a sprain nonetheless. I started reading up on ankle injuries, how to speed healing, how to get better as quickly as possible. Almost everything I read told me to stay off it and wait until it healed.

So that's what I did for the next 6 weeks. I set a date to start running again, but was deathly afraid of re-injury. Then someone recommended KT Tape. I'd heard about it quite a few times, watched some videos, but had never actually tried it, partly because I thought it would be difficult to find. Come to find out, Big 5 had it, so I picked up a roll and taped myself up.

The KT Tape made a HUGE difference, both with running, and with simply living. I thought it wasn't making a difference until I took it off to find the pain was still there. Honestly, if it weren't for the KT Tape, there's no way I could have trained.

7 weeks after injury and 11 weeks after the start of training, I started back with running. Not only did I feel like I couldn't run, but I was basically starting from scratch. My pace was slow, around 12 minutes per mile. Something I didn't expect was the soreness in my legs. My average heart rate was close to 170, when it should have been around 150. Regardless: I was running again!

I drew up a plan to train in the short time I had before CIM. It was strange though, I had 9 weeks to train from scratch where normally it would take 18.

The first week my primary goal was to build up weekly mileage, while maintaining short runs during the week. My intent was to run 5 miles per day for 6 days, but one of those days I was sick. Total mileage for that week was 25, which interestingly enough was the peak for the training I did for the Avenue of the Giants.

The second week was the first real training week, and again I ran 25 miles. This time though, I shifted the mileage from midweek to include a Saturday run and Sunday long run. From here, I progressed week to week, with the weekend long runs building gradually to where I was today at 20 miles.

The original Hal Higdon plan I was following included two 20-milers and stepbacks every 3 weeks. By removing the stepbacks and extra 20-miler, I was able to build the long runs faster.

I was expecting today's 20-miler to go better than it did, based on last week's 18. I quickly found, however, that I was much more fatigued, much more sore, and less interested in the run than I wanted to be. I had a very difficult time getting into that "groove" where you feel you could run forever at that pace. As a result, I did a lot of walking.

Looking back though, the pace didn't matter. I feel confident that CIM will go just fine, and I'll still beat my Avenue of the Giants finishing time of 6:21:30.

CIM Training Week 5, Day 6: 8 Miles

"Hah! This run's going GREAT! Moving right along, look at that, Mile 1 just went by! Yup, my pace is good, I feel good, one of my better runs, in fact. Hi, dog #1. Oh, hi, dog #2. Glad to see you're running AWAY from me instead of AT me. Mile 2, Mile 3, whee! Mile 4's here, time to run around, and I... I... yaaa... aaahhhhhhhhh GAHHHHHH!! WIND!!!! NO, not the wind! Someone! Bleah, can't think! Must... continue... can't... stop... I stopped. Ok."

And so it went. Today was a great run, going fabulously, then I realized why: the wind was at my back. The second I turned around at 4 miles, it was like running through mashed potatoes. No, not mashed potatoes, more like pudding. Sticky, gooey pudding. Then halfway through Mile 7, the phone rang, which gave me an excuse to walk again.

CIM Training Week 5, Day 3: 6 Miles

When I got up this morning, I was sore. I'm not exactly sure, I mean, I know I ran hard yesterday, but this usually doesn't happen. I figured that by the time I ran, the sluggishness would abate enough to have another good run.

After a week of good runs, I can finally say that I've had a poor one. It wasn't too bad, but compared to how I've been running midweek lately, it's not the best. Due to the soreness, I decided to slow down, but would attempt negative splits. Yeah, right.

At any rate, it was bound to happen, I'm not too worried at this point. It just goes to show, recovery is extremely important.

CIM Training Week 5, Day 2: 5 Miles

As a followup on yesterday's entry, I called Rodale today and cancelled both the Runner's World calendar and my Runner's World subscription. The more I think about it, the more I realize it was the right decision. When I asked for a refund of the unfulfilled issues, they said there was only $2 left. Come to find out, it's renewal time.

Renewal time? But I didn't receive a renewal notice! That's right, they said it's auto-renewal. Auto-renewal with credit card charge. I wasn't going to receive a renewal notice, just a similar postcard stating the renewal was automatic.

So goodbye, Runner's World. I've been a tad unhappy with them lately anyway content-wise, so I'm not too worried about it. There are enough online resources to fill the gap.

Meanwhile, today was a 5-miler, originally tagged as a recovery run, but you know what? I was recovered. I felt recovered, I wasn't sore, things were great. So I ran as well as I could.

CIM Training Week 5, Day 1: REST...

It's always interesting what comes up to write about on my rest days. When I got home from work and checked the mail, there was a postcard from Runner's World.

Thank you for your recent subscription to Runner's World Magazine. As promised, you're invited to enjoy a FREE 21-day preview of the RUNNER'S WORLD 2010 Calendar, with no risk or purchase obligation! It features beautiful, full-color scenic running photos, dates and details on the best races from coast to coast, expert training tips, nutrition advice, and inspiring words for top runners!

Yeah, that's cool. I actually have the 2009 calendar, I bought it at REI for $15 or so. Yes, it includes all that information, and costs about the same price as other calendars do this time of year. The next part, however, made me a little bit upset.

Your RUNNER'S WORLD 2010 Calendar will be shipped in just a few short weeks... and you have a full 21 days after it arrives to preview it. If you decide to keep it, pay just $15.95 plus shipping and handling. If you don't like it, simply return it within the 21-day preview and owe nothing. You're under NO OBLIGATION to purchase anything.

Important: To receive your 21-day FREE preview you don't have to do a thing right now! We've already arranged to have your calendar sent out. Return the "No Thanks" card below ONLY if you do NOT want to see the RUNNER'S WORLD 2010 Calendar.

Wait a minute! You mean, you've already arranged for the calendar to be shipped to me? You're letting me preview it for 21 days?

I'm required to take action, lest it cost money.
  • If I return the card, I have to take action. It costs me a stamp, because it's not a business reply postcard.
  • If I do nothing, they'll send me the calendar. I'm then required to take action, either with buying it, or by sending it back.
  • Like Columbia House, if I decide to take the "preview" and open it, then decide to return, I have to pay shipping. If I don't open it up, I still have to put it in the mail somehow.
  • If I decide to pay for it, I'm also paying for shipping. In the end, it costs more than in the store.

Obviously I'm going to do something. I'm inclined to return the postcard. I'm also inclined to cancel my subscription, since I really don't like these sales tactics and think less of Runner's World as a result.

Someone posted about this in the Runner's World Forums about it. One customer service responder gave an 800 # to call, likely the method I'll use. But again, I have to take action. Another responder said that unsolicited packages such as these can be kept under no obligation, but I'm not so sure about that one.

What's your opinion on this? I'd love to hear suggestions.

Running Vlog #18: CIM Training Week 4

CIM Training Week 4, Day 6: 7 miles, Day 7: 18 miles

I would have posted yesterday's run last night, except I needed to get to bed early in order to run this morning. Saturday was a scheduled 7-miler, and it went PERFECTLY. The plan was to run to the end of Arboga Road, stop by someone's house on the way to help with their computer, and run the rest of the way home. Pace was great, and I felt just as good, running at about a 9-minute mile the whole way.

Unfortunately, mile 5 ended up with skewed stats because I accidentally started the Garmin again while working on the computer. I removed that mile from the exported chart, but it was about 9 minutes as well.

After that run, I was actually a little nervous about this morning's run, afraid I might not finish strong. I slowed way down, originally planning on running about 10 minutes per mile, but in the end it was closer to 11.

I was also afraid I wouldn't be able to get up early enough to run. With serving at church this month, I need to be there for the 9am service. I also needed to build a buffer into my run, and leave enough time to take a shower and change before church. This meant I'd be heading out the door at 3:30.

I actually got up at 2:30am, and started running at 3:37am, which I was quite proud about. I also ate a Gu at the 1-hour & 2-hour marks. At 9 miles, I stopped to pee, and I must say, when you're in the middle of orchards in total darkness, you don't have to find a tree to go behind. That was nice!

I had also wanted to stop at Walgreen's originally, but running so early in the morning, they were closed. Interesting the Plumas Lake Walgreen's doesn't open until 7. Podcasts listened to: 2 episodes of the Adam Carolla Podcast, and 2 episodes of Run, Run Live with Chris Russell. I had a little time left at the end, which I filled with the Pandora Yes channel.

Mile 18: 9:34

Most of the times I walked were due to either switching podcasts. I also stopped to use the bathroom midway through. When the last podcast ended at mile 17, that's when I switched to Pandora. Mile 18, I decided to see how hard I could push it for a strong finish. It's nice to know I can push it at the end of a long run!

Final weekly mileages were:

Monday: Rest
Tuesday: 3 miles
Wednesday: 6 miles
Thursday: 3 miles
Friday: Rest
Saturday: 7 miles
Sunday: 18 miles
Total: 37 miles

Next week is the last week before the taper. Sunday's long run will be on a similar route, at 20 miles long.

CIM Training Week 4, Day 4: 3 miles

Today's run was FABULOUS. It was one of those days where everything steps into place. The weather was good and moderate, the traffic was cooperative, I felt fine. I just wish I could run this pace for 26 miles!
