Long Recovery Run/Walk - 14 miles

It was supposed to be a long run, but technically it was a run/walk. I did a lot of walking, but by the end? Those last few miles were all walking.

This was my first "real" run back, and the reason I use quotes is that there were a few runs in between to see how I felt, but nothing serious. Today was to be an all-out, give it what you got, back to the schedule long run. This whole week was, as a matter of fact, and I'm happy to report that I made all three runs.

Anyway, about today. I was doing pretty good toward the beginning, but after the halfway point, things started to go south. I started walking here and there because soreness was starting to set in. It's amazing how quickly fitness can be lost!

Anyway, here's how it looked.

Splits
Mile 1: 9:12.23
Mile 2: 9:22.95
Mile 3: 9:47.12
Mile 4: 9:58.65
Mile 5: 9:53.72
Mile 6: 10:20.06
Mile 7: 12:21.31
Mile 8: 12:40.83
Mile 9: 10:40.46
Mile 10: 11:21.71
Mile 11: 19:21.96
Mile 12: 18:10.01
Mile 13: 20:44.94
Mile 14: 20:48.07

As you can see, things just fell apart at the end, and in the last 4 miles I finally gave it up completely and walked.

All that said, the soreness I was feeling was entirely from not running for a period. The pain from my injury was for the most part gone. I could tell there was something going on, but nothing to stop me from running. This is great! Now I need to work on my stamina and speed, which will come just from running again.

After this run, last week was 25 miles, my highest mileage in almost a month.

Meanwhile, on the way home from work on Friday, I got a call from Fleet Feet to let me know my foam roller's come in! When you purchase $250 in merchandise from them, they email a $25 voucher to you. I now have a $25 voucher, along with a $5 coupon that I got from the Get Your Game Back seminar. The foam roller will be free.

I'm glad to be back.

Hi!

I'm sitting here on the laptop, sitting on my couch, watching Battlestar Galactica. A little while ago, I had dinner. Yet, all I can think of is that tomorrow is my first long run in three weeks.

See, I hurt myself. I did it running, although I didn't do anything in particular wrong. It might have been the wrong kind of shoes, which has been since corrected. It might have been the way I was stepping, or it could have been dumb luck. Whatever the case, I hurt myself, and the pain really hasn't gone away. It's gotten lighter, but it's still there.

The doctor said that while there's irritation, there really isn't anything obviously wrong. It's not a break, looking at hte x-ray. So I'm doing what he's told me to, taking aspirin when needed, resting when I feel the need. If it gets too bad, I'll stop for a while.

My point is that there's a certain element of fear for the run tomorrow. I need to run. There's no question about it. Tomorrow is 14 miles, the following Saturday is 12, and the following Sunday is the Shamrock'n Half Marathon in West Sacramento. It all leads up to The Ave in May, which I'm not cancelling. As a matter of fact, I'm making arrangements for my sister to come out from Charlotte, NC in order to see me finish.

So in the morning I'll be out there. I'm not sure how it will go. I'm sure it'll be fine, but this nagging thought in my brain is that I'll be miserable for a week after. That said, I'm extremely happy to be out there. This week I've run 10 miles, and still feel alright. I even went to the gym today.

Warmup, w/45lb bar
* Overhead Squat
* Barbell Squat
* Good Morning
* Alternating Lunge
* Romanian Deadlift
* Bent-Over Row

Workout, supersets of 2
* Wide-stance Squat, 4x12x135lbs
* Dumbbell Bench Press, 4x12x35lbs
* Wide-grip Chin-up, 3x1
* Push Press, 2x12x85lbs, 1x8x85lbs

This week has been good as far as workouts are concerned. I followed the marathon plan, ran my two runs. I went to the gym three times, and after tomorrow, it will be my first successful week in about a month. Now if I can just keep it up, I'll be doing great!

Sprint Intervals + Doctor Visit

Today I decided that I'd go ahead and do the scheduled sprint intervals, but rather than outside, do it on the treadmill at the gym.

And you know, they actually went pretty well. I did feel some pain in my leg afterwards, but not near as much as in the past. Not only that, but it went away a lot quicker than before. It was about 4.5 miles total: 10 min warmup, 4x800m (1:30 RI), 10 min cooldown.

Then this afternoon, I went to see my doctor. I told him the history of my problem, reminded him I'd been in earlier, and what was going on now. I haven't been in there in about 6 months, and they've implemented something new. In each examination room they have a computer with access to the group database. When I told the doctor I'd been to Urgent Care about 6 months ago for an x-ray of my leg, he looked it up, saw the visit, and bam, he had the x-rays at his fingertips.

He examined my leg and it wasn't as sensitive as I expected it to be this close to running. He then looked at the x-ray from 6 months ago, and basically said it was a simple irritation that likely was irritated by something that was wrong with my gait. I mentioned the fact that I had the wrong shoes for a period, then showed him the insoles I was wearing.

So his thoughts were the same as mine, which was basically, having the wrong shoes irritated my leg to the point of creating pain. Getting the new shoes was the likely solution to the problem, but sicne I already had the irritation, it was hard to see the improvement.

He told me to do what I was already doing: judicious icing of my leg after a run, take a pain reliever if necessary, and if it got too bad, take a rest. Most importantly, he specifically told me he wouldn't tell me to stop running! He doesn't see any chance of injuring myself further by running.

Things are certainly looking up. My training will continue!

Cross Training - Elliptical Trainer

Back on the elliptical today, although a different machine this time. This was a Precor, one that has incline capability, and this evening my whole lower body is sore. Not sore like my leg pain, just muscle soreness. I guess it was a good workout. :) I was on there for 45 minutes, and burned 416 calories. I also have to make a confession... I watched 90210. It was the only TV that had closed captioning turned on! So I got to watch Kelly & Dylan drive down to Mexico and transport drugs illegally across the border for some friend of Kelly's who had... something. I dunno. Then the girl threw them away. How sad.

Cross Training/Recovery Workout

Yes, I'm still alive. Yes, I'm still having leg issues. I wish I could report better news, but I haven't run since last Thursday. Today was my first visit to the gym since Friday.

I didn't post, because honestly I didn't want to turn into one of those people who every day posted, "Still not doing anything", then complained about it. I figured I'd spare everyone that pain.

I tried making an appointment with the doctor on Monday, but it was a holiday. I didn't even realize it was a holiday, since I worked. Anyway, I called on Tuesday morning, only to find he's on vacation for another week. What luck, eh?

There is hope though. I have a book I've had for quite a while called The Runner's Repair Manual, and I was looking through it when I found an exact description of my problem.

Pain on the Inner Side of Leg

You feel this pain deep inside the leg. Press the inner side of your leg - the line between the calf muscle and the big shin bone. If that's painful, you've put some strain on a muscle that runs from the shin bone around the ankle and attaches the ball of the foot. This muscle gives some support to the arch of the foot.

Most likely, your arches "fall" when you run. Read the section on weak foot, and follow those procedures - the arch supporting strapping, the commercial arch support, and the heel pads.

You should also do stretching exercises to stretch the calf muscle. Wall Pushups is a good one. And your first aid is the same as for anterior shin splints. Wrap your leg in an icy towel after running. Take two aspirins with each meal. Don't try to run through pain. You've got to rest.

I've got the resting part down. So looking at the section on weak foot, in particular this part stuck out:

[One symptom of weak foot is that you] can't stand very long without rolling your feet toward the outside.

Uh, yeah. I've done this my whole life. This is why I found it strange when Fleet Feet told me I was a pronator. If you recall, they re-evaluated me after my injury and told me I don't pronate, that I supinate. Totally consistent with this. The book goes on:

The inner side of the arch is weak, so people with this problem direct the weight toward the outside. This is a good exercise for you, by the way. And it's just what an arch support does - it tilts some of the weight toward the outside of the foot.

It certainly sounds like what I'm already doing.

Meanwhile, next Monday is a seminar at Fleet Feet put on by Mercy Health called Get Back Your Game. Apparently some sports doctors are going to be there, along with instructional videos. Information, basically. Specifically, there will be some people there I can talk to about my problem.

Today would normally have been a weight workout day in the gym, but I took it as a "cardio test" day. I did:

30 minutes elliptical, 285 calories burned
5 minutes rowing machine, 43 calories burned
24 minutes spin bike (DVD), 252 calories burned

It was a good workout overall, but my primary goal was to do some cardio I hadn't done before, and see how it would go. I'm happy to say that on the elliptical machine, I didn't feel like I'd fall off! I guess my balance & equilibrium has changed the past year and a half since I last tried. My only real complaint is that I didn't burn near the calories I would have burned running for the same amount of time. I burned almost 100 calories LESS than I would running.

The rowing machine was a little bit different story. I only did 5 minutes because as I was going along, I could really feel it in my leg. So I think for the problem I'm having, the rowing machine is out.

I was also going to do the same 30-minute spin DVD I did before, but my feet kept coming out of the stirrups! I don't know if this has happened to you, but those pedals keep going. After it happened the 2nd time I just decided to give it up.

In the end, I burned 580 calories total. It felt good to be back in the gym, this was my first time in there since Friday.

While in the spin room I also wrote down what the DVD's were, if anyone's interested.

Spinning Spin & Burn
Johnny G Live
Spinning Spin & Slim Express
Spinning Spin & Sculpt

I spent tonight icing my leg while watching Lost. I don't know what I'm going to do when that show goes away.

Tempo Run - 6.01 miles

Still in recovery mode, but I have to say, I'm getting there. Saturday will be two weeks since I first started having troubles. I think that between RICE, wearing the knee brace, and taking it easier while running, I'm getting better.

Now that I said that, watch it get worse. :)

Today was a scheduled tempo run. 1 mile easy, 4 miles tempo, 1 mile eaaaasy. .22 miles, REAL easy, hehe. Goal for tempo miles was 8:22-8:37 pace.

Splits were:
Mile 1: 8:51.67
Mile 2: 8:20.82 Tempo
Mile 3: 8:38.47 Tempo
Mile 4: 8:30.28 Tempo
Mile 5: 8:41.74 Tempo
Mile 6: 10:59.96 Eaaaaasy

54 minutes, 718 calories burned, average 9:00/mi.

Once I was back at work, I did about 10 minutes of stretching. My leg was in slight pain (not too bad), so I iced it for good measure. I didn't wear the knee brace AT ALL today. I just might be on the mend.

Meanwhile, Saturday's a 12-mile long run, but rain's in the forecast. Hopefully it won't be too much of a downpour, otherwise I might have to postpone or skip.

You Call Those Sprints?!?! - 6.04 miles

I ran 6.04 miles today. The run scheduled for today was 10 minute warmup, 5x1k w/400m rest intervals. As far as pain goes, there really wasn't any, but there was some soreness in my thighs. Trying not to push it too hard and hurt myself, I ended up running 1/4 mile intervals adding the rest of the time of each to the rest intervals. I had the Garmin set to record 1k interval splits, so I'm not worrying about posting them here.

After I was finished, I did whatever I could to reduce the amount of soreness I experienced. I stretched for about 15 minutes, then iced both my knee and lower-leg for 15. Then I wore my knee brace the rest of the day.

Tonight other than a bit of soreness, I feel really well. Hopefully I'll feel this good in the morning.

Well, I did 45 minutes on the stairclimber for the first time in probably 6 months. It wasn't too bad, I wore the knee brace the entire time and iced for 15 minutes after. Burned 440 calories, now it's time for bed. The schedule says sprints tomorrow, but I'm thinking another easy run.

Recovery Run - 10 miles + New shoes...

Have I got an update for you guys. I'll try to make it short, but I don't know if that's possible. *ahem*

As you guys know (or maybe not), I've been wearing Brooks Adrenaline GTS 8's for quite some time now. I've had my current pair since November, the pair before that I think I got in June, and I have no idea when I got the pair before that. I should also add that all my life, I've tended to lean my feet outward when I walk...

When I first picked them up, it was at a smaller Fleet Feet store that didn't spend much time with me. They watched me run across the store and back a couple times, then sent me on my way. With the 2nd pair, I was having a similar issue to the one I've been having (not the knee issue, but the one with my lower leg). I went into the bigger Sacramento store, and a guy in there spent about an hour evaluating my feet to see what might help.

He said the same thing: that I was a pronator, and need a stability shoe. He said that the Adrenalines were fine, but that I tend to turn my right foot outward as I run, and suggested insoles. I posted about it in the health thread at the time, he recommended green Superfeet. It made sense, since those are the same insoles I've been using for two years in my hiking boots.

The problem I was having got a little better, but never went completely away. I went through two pairs of Adrenalines with Superfeet insoles. That was when I started tracking my shoe usage, but you figure three, maybe four months with that first pair. So we're talking, running a year with Adrenalines.

My pastor had the running group going this Saturday morning, and I thought you know, I've had it. Let's take another trip to Fleet Feet, then run with the group and see how it goes. At Fleet Feet, I went through my history with them, and we went back to the drawing board. They had me put on my Adrenalines and run across the store.

When I got back the girl said, uhhhh, you're not pronating. Your feet are turning outward.

So she got 3 or 4 pairs of different types. She brought out a pair of Brooks shoes, some New Balance, and Nikes. This time around, I was comparing not the feel of the shoes on my feet, but how my leg felt as I ran. It was a tossup between the New Balance and Nike, so I put on a pair of each. The Nike won.

I give you Nike Pegasus 25

I ran 3 or 4 times across the store and they felt good. We also got the opinions of two other people in the store. So that's THREE people who felt I supinate instead of pronate. Finally to see how it felt, we put the Superfeet into the Pegasus shoes, and they felt fabulous. So I walked out the door with them.

I didn't make it to meet up with the group at 11. I got there at 12:15, and they were just finishing up. We talked about my new shoes for a while, and I decided that since I was alone, I'd go ahead and do my 10-miler as an easy recovery run. I didn't even wear my Garmin, I just went out by feel and decided to run/walk, walking occasionally just to see how I felt. At the 5-mile point I did a judicious amount of stretching, and in the end I think I walked about 1 out of 10 miles.

My average pace was 12 minutes per mile, although I was closer to 10 when I was actually running. As an indicator as to how easy I was running, my average HR was 122, and it never peaked over 145. I burned 957 calories as well. Overall I didn't feel too bad, but the real test would be later in the day.

We did errands and sure enough, as I got out of the car to walk into Walmart, the pain hit. In my leg. In my knee. So while there, I picked up a knee brace. I've never worn one before but figure what the heck, right?

Back at home when I put the brace on, it was like magic. ALL pain was gone, including the one in the middle of my leg. So I played around a little, moved my leg around. If I moved it at certain angles it would hurt, but nothing like before.

So I've been wearing the brace all day today. I don't plan to run with it, but my hope is that by wearing it when not running, while working and even at the gym, it will help it heal. *fingers crossed*.

Meanwhile, I'll keep you guys appraised as to how the Nikes are working out.

Nothing!

That's right. Today I didn't make it to the gym. I didn't run. I worked, but basically sat in my chair all day.

And you know what? My leg is still bothering me. Where I thought the discomfort had localized, it really hadn't, walking around I was trying to pinpoint exactly where it was happening, but it seemed to move around. Sometimes it would be there, and sometimes it would be completely gone. I'm just going to have to give in and see the doctor.

Anyway, I just had to whine a little. I feel like I've been hurting for months, when it's only been a week. I think I said it before, this is the first real injury I've ever had. I suppose it's a good thing, I was injured doing something healthy. The fact that I was injured running means that I wasn't sitting around, I was running.

That's enough whining for now. I'm taking my son on a short 4-mile hike to see bald eagle migration, or at least that's the plan. We won't know for sure if there are any out there until we actually get there. But it'll be fun.

Treadmill Recovery Run - 4.25 miles

Wow, have you guys noticed how my daily tweets have been the only thing that's gotten posted to my blog? Sorry about that, but I've just been so busy the past few days, coupled with not running, that I just haven't posted. Then to top it all off, Loudtwitter screwed up and output ALL my tweets and didn't filter out the @ replies.

Anyway, today I decided to run the treadmill as a recovery run to see how it would go. I ran 5 minute intervals, the following speeds:

1: 5mph
2: 6mph
3: 7mph
4: 7.5mph
5: 8mph
6: 7mph
7: 6mph
8: 5mph

It didn't go too badly, I ran for 40 minutes and burned 485 calories. It really felt good to be running, but my right leg was still a bit stiff. This evening my knee is a bit achy, but again, not too bad.

I also have a funny story. On the treadmill, when I got to 8mph a guy running another treadmill started giving me looks and finally said, "DANG, are you training for a marathon or something?"

I said, "As a matter of fact, yes." He started stumbling over his words, and said something like, "Oh, uh, I was just, uh, kidding, but cool, good for you. You're wearing me out just watching you run." Then he stopped his treadmill and left.

Did I say something?
