That's right, I'm back. Supposedly. It's entirely possible, quite possible, perhaps and tentatively, that there's a rumor about the slight inkling I have to, maybe, write in this blog. Really.
I have this thing about not writing when I'm down. I'm not entirely sure why, I think I just hate reading blogs when they're always negative, always talking about NOT doing the something the blogger is normally talking about doing. In the process, my blog entries have consisted entirely of my Twitter activity.
That is, until about a month ago, when LoudTwitter broke unceremoniously, and without announcement. I suppose it's my fault for not noticing, which just goes to show how much I've thought about this blog for the past month. I do apologize.
Shortly after running the Avenue of the Giants Marathon, I started having pains deep within my left hip joint. My first thought, of course, was to take a short break. I took a few days off, and it happened again. So I thought ok, it's my shoes... I had about 350 miles on my shoes at that point, so I went down to buy new ones. They were out of stock.
I thought of buying elsewhere, but realized that if I had them order the shoes and not run at all until then, it would force me to take a break to heal. I did this, but when the shoes came in, I didn't have the money to pay for them. This pushed it out another week, giving me a full two weeks of rest.
When I started running, BAM, the problem occurred again. I went to the doctor, who gave me an xray. After a week and no call, I called his office only to find him saying there was nothing wrong. It's the same old story. My response to them was, "Great, so I'm on my own again?" The doctor then referred me to an orthopedist. :)
A week later at the orthopedist's office, I found out he doubled as a sports medicine doctor as well. Finally, someone who knew what they were doing! He looked at my x-ray for a while, and had a 30-minute talk with me. He wasn't a runner, but didn't have anything against it. The advice he gave me was:
* Take glucosamine (I'd already started by then)
* Take Aleve regularly in almost prescription strength (doubling OTC dose)
* Stretch religously after runs
* Use the foam roller religiously before AND after runs
So the past week I've run the same schedule as Hal Higdon's Intermediate I marathon training program, albeit with less mileage. Am I in pain? Yes, although a bit less (it was already starting to get less when I saw the orthopedist). I'm not sure doing what the doctor told me has helped yet, because I still feel the same. At the same time, recovery is quicker (I'm usually recovered enough to run the next day).
In faith, I registered for the California International Marathon.
The 18-week Hal Higdon training program starts August 3, but the first week starts with 24 miles. Leading up to August 3, I've been slowly building up my mileage to at least that point. I actually managed to run 19 miles this last week! Pain's been managable, so I really think I can do it.
Meanwhile, I picked up a wireless bluetooth headset.
Along with the Palm Pre, I honestly can't believe I managed without it. Seriously, running with a wire either hanging loose or threaded through the arm & neck of my shirt was just not cutting it. The range is great as well, I can put the Pre in my fanny pack while wearing the headset, and make all adjustments remotely! The headset also works to answer the phone, and while the quality for phone calls isn't the greatest, it does work.
So that's where I'm at. I plan on posting regular workouts starting immediately, and want to build up the habit once again. I'm looking forward to it all!

- 15:30:22: @disneyrunner The account was deleted in the Great Purge.
- 16:05:31: @dollsoflace The point is to have it hang out, so you won't lose the cap. It's not going anywhere or breaking, it's strong. @palm #pre
- 16:13:21: @dollsoflace Yup, hanging out about an inch. I prefer it hanging that far out, otherwise it'd be in the way of the USB plug #pre
- 16:14:25: My son's playing the Transformers game (from the 1st movie). Prime keeps telling him to go to the landing site but he's too busy
- 16:14:31: blowing stuff up.
- 16:21:21: @TLM26 I was just on FB, my sister's childhood friend & her sister ran the half. I ran 5 today. ;)
- 16:23:09: @TLM26 I also took a picture of ducks crossing the road, nothing but excitement here today. Wish I was at SFM tho.
- 17:09:10: @MacStainless You're driving me nuts with your #fb tweets when I can't get #fb to work. :(
- 17:10:59: @MacStainless I thought I did that, but I'll do it again.
- 17:14:33: Test testy test testes. Test. #fb
- 17:20:23: @MacStainless Nope, still doesn't work. It's not like my Twitter profile is private, I'm wide open :)
- 17:21:52: @disneyrunner active rest is your friend!
- 17:24:33: @MacStainless I've tried it both with it disabled and with it removed. I just removed it before I removed/reinstalled selective
- 17:24:57: @MacStainless Be sure settings is unchecked? You mean "update streams"?
- 17:30:01: Test. #fb
- 17:32:11: @macstainless That's odd. I unchecked "update streams". Now when I go back in there, that option's not there, but "post one line" is there
- 17:32:22: TEST. #fb
- 17:38:17: @quotidianlight Hey I can always be relied upon for a laugh. :)
- 17:40:37: test #fb
- 17:46:34: @alroadrunn3r It's the next step after barefoot running
- 18:02:41: @turtlescanrun When I did mine, I did both. I drank water at aid stations and had Cytomax in my bottle
- 18:07:17: @turtlescanrun Hard to tell, I finished in 6:21. ;) I'm not sure how well it helped but I stayed hydrated and it tasted good.
- 18:07:39: @turtlescanrun It claims to reduce lactic acid buildup which is probably fine in a sub-3 marathoner, not so sure if it did diddly for me
- 18:08:57: @kelownagurl hey!
- 18:10:47: test #fb
- 18:11:18: @kelownagurl I'm doing well, managed to run 22 miles this week. Fighting with Facebook, trying to get selective twitter to work.
- 18:14:11: @turtlescanrun Every mile! That's quite a lot
- 18:14:34: @kelownagurl Eating/weight is a bust at present, back at 180. It seems that if I fail for one day I gain it all back
- 18:14:55: @kelownagurl selective twitter is a facebook app that lets you send twitter updates by putting #fb at the end of your tweets
- 18:15:03: @kelownagurl It seems to work for everyone but me
- 18:17:05: @kelownagurl Which is where selective twitter comes in. You can send it there if you want, and not send if you don't want.
- 18:17:09: test #fb
- 18:18:56: @kelownagurl It was more like two days but still. How does a person gain 6 pounds in 2 days? really. :)
- 18:19:14: @kelownagurl But I'm running more now so hopefully it'll help.
- 18:21:53: @kelownagurl at least I'm not in total depression mode again
- 18:25:10: @kelownagurl I'm surprised how my mood is destroyed when I've gained weight sometimes
- 18:30:19: @turtlescanrun On my long runs last year I cached my own water at the aid station intervals. I had water left over.
- 19:37:19: @eveblackorwhite heyy! :)
- 19:39:27: I'm watching this show called Dating in the Dark. I normally don't watch shows like this, but the Tivo recorded it. So what the heck.
- 19:47:53: COUGAR TOWN?!?!?! What the hell?
- 19:49:05: @krauser I just watched Tron a few hours ago, amazing how much OLDER Jeff Bridges is/looks
- 19:50:02: @krauser Boxleitner doesn't look that much older to me, it's not as big a difference
- 19:53:47: @alitherunner Neither. I'm gassy.
- 19:55:43: @alitherunner 3yo daughter also said my bellybutton disappeared. It was under the table.
- 19:56:36: @wowzurz I noticed that my alarm sounds are quieter, they don't wake me up anymore. I don't send smileys so I hadn't noticed. #pre
- 20:01:21: @alitherunner great job!
- 20:03:50: @alitherunner I feel the same way. I'm still running tentatively, slower, but glad to be out there.
- 20:07:06: @alitherunner I'm also still in pain here & there, but I managed to run 22 miles this week. More running days helped obviously.
- 20:11:32: @alitherunner I miscounted! It was 19 miles. :)
- 20:13:20: @gchance the first training week is 24... so next week I plan on 21. The first marathon training is the week after.
- 20:14:56: @alitherunner what are you training for?
- 20:17:54: @alitherunner good place to be in december, that's for sure
- 20:18:27: @alitherunner I may have a few training partners this time around, at least once a week. A couple people are wanting to run with me
- 20:18:43: @alitherunner but since they aren't training, once I start extending out my mileage they won't be joining me hehehe
- 20:19:22: @alitherunner Also one of my backpacking friends came back from deployment to announce no backpacking this yr bc he's doing a century ride
- 20:23:18: @alitherunner I do understand his dilemma. When you do long training runs or rides on Saturdays it's hard to go hiking all weekend
- 20:23:46: @alitherunner Forget RnR, do the elvis run! :)
