CIM Training Week 3, Day 6: 5 miles

Today was a wonderful, wonderful run. On paper, it was supposed to be 5 miles at race pace, but I really do think I should have started slower. What made it wonderful though, was the fact that my 7-year-old son Gregory rode his bike while I ran.

We went out on the Yuba City bike trail, a choice I made so he wouldn't be riding his bike on busy streets.

There was also a surprising number of runners out there. As I started, a young husband & wife headed out, and shortly thereafter, three women were running as well. On the way back, there was a large group of about 20 women walking the trail. So it was pretty neat. Note the slower Mile 3, where I walked a bit.

Splits
Mile 1: 8:47
Mile 2: 9:04
Mile 3: 9:23
Mile 4: 10:20
Mile 5: 9:57

5 miles, 47:34, 9:32/mi average, 589 calories burned.

As I ran to the car, who do I see but Steve Davis from my church! He was out with a couple friends on a recumbent bike. He said he'd only been riding for a few weeks, but one of the people he was with was swearing up and down about how it was better than a standard bike for older folk. While they looked like interesting bikes to ride, I'm not entirely sure the workout would be as good, especially on any terrain other than flatland.

As we pulled out, I talked to the guy from the married couple we'd seen earlier. He was running at a much faster pace than I was (8:30-8:45), and said he was training for a half marathon in Washington. His name was Ray, and we talked a bit about running.

This was certainly one of the better runs I've had. I think I'm going to start bringing Gregory out for my Saturday race-pace runs, he had a blast. I did, too.

What a great run, Greg. Nice that your son can come with you.
