I didn't get a chance to post yesterday, but that happens. Ran 3 miles yesterday but was REALLY feeling it in the hip. Oddly enough, stretching helped tremendously and pain was minimal the rest of the day.
I seem to be getting back to normal, bit by bit.

Mile 3: 9:37
And today was a rest day, which after the soreness was certainly welcome. I also have a funny story.
There's a new product on the market called Action Wipes. They're designed as an all natural way to clean up when active, whether you do sports or just sweaty from driving a while. :) The woman who created them is named Martha Van Inwegen, and I follow her on Twitter.
There's also a longtime author who used to edit Runner's World, named Bart Yasso. Martha was at an event, talking to Bart, and I joked on Twitter that she should have him autograph a single-serving pack of Action Wipes. Ha-ha, that was that.
So yesterday I opened the mailbox to find she'd sent me a package:
You got it, she sent me a bunch of Action Wipes, two of which were autographed by Bart Yasso. The caption reads, "Greg, never limit where running can take you. Bart Yasso". What a hoot! I was laughing for about 10 minutes on that one.
Anyway, tomorrow's a 5-mile run in the morning, and a 5-mile hike to a 10k peak! Big, busy day. Have a good evening!

- 20:33:25: Hurry boy, it's waiting there for you.
- 20:34:36: @bapper In that case you'll want one, although if for runs & trail riding I'd stick with a 1L. 2L is a bit big (I tried that once hehe)
- 20:35:30: Oh man, 20 oz isn't big enough for hardly anything. I use up the Arrowhead bottles (700ml/1pt7oz) for a one-hour run
- 20:35:54: For the longer runs, caching water worked well for me, and being out there overnight they were chilled
- 20:36:03: OK I can't stand this, my avatar's driving me nuts.

- 20:41:56: @bapper I take water for the shortest of runs, especially in the heat. Today I ran 3 miles and drank half the bottle.
- 20:49:57: @beejjorgensen Yup, same here. I learned that lesson early on hiking at Bald Rock Dome... got dehydrated on top of a rock, almost passed out

- 09:22:17: @dnorton My gut?
- 09:23:00: @steveheath There's a one-off show Cinemax did called Breasts: A Documentary, where women sat around topless discussing their breasts
- 09:23:21: @steveheath In it was this morbidly obese woman who refused to take off her top but at the end they got her to do it
- 09:23:41: @steveheath You couldn't see her nipples. She looked down, smiled, and said, "Oh, you can't see anything anyway." SERIOUSLY.

- 09:51:00: @eveblackorwhite I let it go :)
- 09:56:34: @eveblackorwhite Sorry, twitter-confusion. What was trashy & disturbing? My gut?
- 09:59:12: @eveblackorwhite Oh, heh. The one I pasted wasn't the documentary I was talking about. The one I mentioned was serious in nature actually
- 09:59:30: @eveblackorwhite The women were talking about their history, their view of them, that sort of thing. It really was interesting.
- 10:00:39: @eveblackorwhite Yeah documentaries have become almost entirely reality shows
- 10:01:33: @eveblackorwhite From the women's points of view. It's not online but here's a description: http://www.sugarpictures.com/Films/Breasts.html
- 10:01:43: @eveblackorwhite It won all sorts of awards actually
- 10:02:21: @eveblackorwhite One girl was hilarious, she talked about the "pencil test" and how they say if your breasts are "perfect" the pencil drops
- 10:02:34: @eveblackorwhite She demonstrated and said, "See? A vice-like grip."
- 10:03:10: @eveblackorwhite One woman interviewed had gone through a mastectomy, another woman had a breast reduction
- 10:04:53: @eveblackorwhite I haven't seen any of the bbc reveals documentaries
- 10:08:42: @eveblackorwhite I told you, I've never seen BBC Reveals. The Breasts documentary I was talking about was on Cinemax about 15 years ago
- 10:09:03: @eveblackorwhite I gave the link to the BBC documentary to make you & @karrock laugh (which you did)
- 10:15:58: @eveblackorwhite :)
- 10:16:37: @eveblackorwhite In that girl's case she said that when she got hers they were like *poof* and there they were
- 10:16:54: @eveblackorwhite Her point was that being little all the women told her about the pencil test so she felt bad the moment she got them
- 10:17:35: @eveblackorwhite http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pencil_test hehehe
- 10:19:03: @blackfonzie Defining moment. :) I haven't seen it in 15 years.
- 10:19:22: @eveblackorwhite Sometimes we do, less as we get older. Teens though that's about all we talk about.
- 10:38:29: I swear, every time I go to run (same time every day) someone comes in or calls and screws it up.
- 10:45:10: @erin337 That's the beauty of it, you get to #ff her as well
- 10:45:31: @dnorton you missed my gut, dude
- 10:53:00: @karrock Then @eveblackorwhite's breasts defy gravity?
- 10:57:28: So now that @dnorton's seen my 1 pack, I'm off to run 5 miles. 69 degrees, so away I go.

- 13:43:41: @ginaharris1 Yeah I was doing real well until mile 4 when I slowed down. Mile 5 is slower bc this guy on a bike talked to me
- 13:43:58: @ginaharris1 Which was cool actually bc we usually wave as we pass. He's in his 70s.
- 13:44:57: @chasingiron You don't twitter often enough.
- 13:45:55: OK off to the remote site, which I guarantee, it'll take me 2 seconds to resolve the problem.
- 14:02:13: I lied. Someone's missing virus protection. Hmm.
- 14:15:22: @ginaharris1 Same here, we've barely talked in the past. He was just wondering where I'd been (injured)
- 14:16:51: @ginaharris1 He also said he saw me when he'd driven atound 30 mins earlier & recognized me by how I run
- 14:17:19: @ginaharris1 Not entirely sure that's a good thing! Hehe
- 14:28:03: @ginaharris1 That's what I'm saying... Did he recognize me because I run like a dork? That sort of thing.
- 14:49:54: Gah it's tough getting out of here today. My boss said wait until 3. The upside is that I can go home from there.

- 20:06:20: @karrock No such luck tomorrow night, my mom flies in from Boston at 10:30 and I'm picking her up. Ack.
- 20:10:26: @karrock That's ok. Usually we go one episode of one or two series we have recorded per night, no repeats on subsequent nights.
- 20:10:52: @karrock so one night it'll be Torchwood & Rescue Me, another night Desparate Housewives & Doctor Who heh
- 20:11:21: @karrock But when Lost is on, forget it, that gets watched. Some shows get that status... 24 gets watched semi-live.

- 20:34:19: @grshane I'm *real* nervous spending real $ on a bike, given how he treated his last one
- 20:40:00: @rodmur It was really small, too. Like, she said something a few times and I said she'd said it 20 or something.
- 21:10:58: *gulp* my father-in-law's discovered Twitter. I guess I won't be having anymore breast discussions. He's not following me yet though.

5 miles
I've been trying to keep the Hal Higdon schedule leading up to the start of training, even though I'm not keeping the same mileage. Today was 5 miles.
I purposely kept a slower pace than yesterday in an attempt not to overdo it and find myself in pain, and it seems to be working.
Splits
Mile 1: 9:17
Mile 2: 9:35
Mile 3: 10:11
Mile 4: 10:33
Mile 5: 11:37
51:15, 10:14/mi, 777 calories burned
Here's something neat. The last mile would have looked a lot more like Mile 4 if it hadn't been for a guy on a bike who stopped me. I've waved and said a few words to him in the past, he seems to ride at the same time as my lunchtime runs. An older gentleman, in his 70s, he was wondering where I'd been. I told him about my injuries, and the fact that for a while I was running at night rather than at lunch.
Anyway, he told me he'd seen me about a half hour ago, and recognized me because of the way I run. The way I run? So does this mean he recognized the guy running like a dork and knew it was me?
I walked the last half mile or so back to work as a cooldown, and once back did 15 minutes of stretching and the foam roller on both IT bands.
Looking forward to highlighting workouts next week. :)

- 09:00:24: @blackfonzie My guess is, Fogerty was in the bar with the dude, heard him bitch, then wrote the song. So now the dude's doubly pissed.
- 09:01:01: @blackfonzie So now the dude can't even write a song about Lodi, because Fogerty *STOLE* it from him! Bastard.

- 09:12:35: @blackfonzie Yup that one made me laugh. Of COURSE it's insultive! Also the guy says he's from Tracy. Tracy's much, much worse.
- 09:12:49: @blackfonzie They're just little towns, nothing wrong with that... but ever been in a bar in a small town like that? Good god.
- 09:13:57: @blackfonzie In small towns there's no such things as a "sports bar" or "night club". Seedy bars where people get shot, man.
- 09:27:57: @TLM26 Yup. Buy the pics.

- 09:50:32: @TheBadCop ah.
- 09:51:59: @TLM26 Nope, they're doing it "properly". They have a database that's accessed by the script putting the watermark over it. Sorry.
- 09:52:26: @TLM26 Some photographers don't spend the $ so they'll have a watermarked version AND an unwatermarked that you can find links to.
- 09:53:45: @Lybbe That's because your daughter's an alien and doesn't want to be detected.
- 09:54:43: @ADoRunRun Oh, if that's when you're introducing it, then don't. I misunderstood. :)
- 10:02:25: @TLM26 I totally agree there. I think you'd be ok with buying the ones you like, then scanning for an avatar.
- 10:02:50: @TLM26 What they're doing is trying to avoid people buying the digital version, then blowing up to all sorts of sizes.
- 10:03:09: @TLM26 You'd be amazed at the low quality people will accept on account of it being free
- 10:03:40: @SoFlaEstatePlan I wonder how many people do the same thing, mistyping "prostate" for "prostrate"
- 10:05:00: @TLM26 Last year @quotidianlight did a run where I was able to get all her images from the site without watermarks hehe
- 10:20:57: @ADoRunRun I'd say then, bring your own. I always bring my own anyway. :)
- 11:35:08: @blackfonzie I live in a heavily Sikh-populated area (the temple is here). Now THERE are some impressive beards.

- 12:10:30: @ginaharris1 Hey! Today's run was FABULOUS, best run I've had in a long time, maybe the best run since the marathon
- 12:11:06: @ginaharris1 Granted, it was only 3 miles. But still. :)
- 12:16:04: @disneyrunner Very true, but they were purposely going to the cheapest, widely known places. I disagreed with them a few times too
- 12:16:28: @disneyrunner Like they said men's running shorts were nonexistent at Target, but that's where I get mine. I love them.

- 13:23:51: @quotidianlight BTW Jillian's radio show & podcast are no more as of a week and a half ago. :(
- 13:24:30: @quotidianlight Anyway I've been looking at a replacement for GNC protein powder because it tastes like ass :)

- 20:28:39: I haven't been listening to music while running though, it's been podcasts.

Great run - 3.1 miles!!!
It's been a long time since I had a run this good. I certainly haven't run this well since the marathon... no, prior to the marathon. Even when I ran the Zoo Zoom, which was a 5k, I didn't run as well.
Notice I didn't say faster. I was a minute slower than the Zoo Zoom, but I felt BETTER. The Zoo Zoom was a struggle from beginning to end, and I think that was the beginning of my downward spiral into what ultimately became of my running. Today's run, in the heat, huffing & puffing to the best of my ability, was enjoyable.
My goal for the day was to run as well as I could to see if indeed I was getting over whatever the problem in my hip joint is, or if it was in my mind. I think I'm ready to start training next week.
Splits
Mile 1: 8:53.42
Mile 2: 8:50.13
Mile 3: 9:31.12
0.1 mi: 1:01.59 (9:58/mi)
3.1 miles (5k), 9:07/mi(!), 28:16, 451 calories burned
I walked the last quarter mile back to work. Today I felt I could do no wrong. I love when great runs happen.

- 08:34:56: @cyberpenguin @karrock Sadly no, I never had a poster. But regardless, my wife wouldn't go for having the poster on our bedroom wall.
- 08:35:16: @cyberpenguin @karrock I watched Tron yesterday with my son, my wife told me she'd never seen it... but took a nap with our daughter
- 08:35:43: @cyberpenguin @karrock So she STILL hasn't seen it. Yet one of the selling points in our relationship early on was she was a sci-fi fan
- 08:35:52: I want my money back. ;)
- 08:41:04: @karrock It's my fault I suppose. This was my first viewing of Tron since before we got together, and we've been married almost 8 yrs
- 08:41:15: @karrock ACK! Almost 9. April will be 9 years.
- 08:42:01: @cyberpenguin @karrock More like, she "likes sci-fi". Or, "She liked that movie with the beeping short robot and the big hairy guy."
- 08:43:34: @karrock I am happy to say though that I turned her onto Highlander. Sad to say that she sees nothing wrong with the Sickening.
- 08:49:24: @cyberpenguin She did say she had a crush on Luke Skywalker as a kid
- 08:49:47: @cyberpenguin @karrock I will say this though... 85% of the time when we watch TV together, we watch sci-fi.
- 08:51:52: @karrock @cyberpenguin As I said, I watched it yesterday with my son, but my wife opted to take a nap with my daughter instead.
- 08:54:12: @cyberpenguin @karrock Yup, she just found +1 leather armor at her feet as she entered the maze
- 08:54:31: @karrock sci-fi enough. My wife does like BttF.
- 08:54:56: @karrock I'm still pissed Old Biff was able to get back to his future though ;)
- 08:57:48: @karrock I didn't have a problem with the dark alternate '85, although I wouldn't think alt-Biff's involvement would affect the whole world
- 08:58:00: @karrock it certainly didn't affect the bum
- 09:05:08: @karrock We did see the clip of Biff's meteoric rise of course. All that stuff would have at least had a pop culture effect
- 09:05:20: @karrock obviously gambling's legal in hill valley, perhaps the entire state
- 09:05:33: @karrock wasn't Biff testifying to congress or something to legalize gambling?
- 09:05:58: @karrock @blackfonzie Yup, he was a softcore director, crazy
- 09:06:23: @karrock @blackfonzie or should I say the guy who played him was
- 09:07:20: @palm What, the sunset was better than my duck & goose crossing? I see how you are. ;)
- 09:08:44: @karrock oh my god, I was reading the line "the van wouldn't act again for many years" and the FIRST THING I thought of was Hurley... hehe
- 09:12:31: @karrock I don't think it's the same exact van. Same type though.
- 09:12:55: @cyberpenguin @karrock That's where The Time Traveler's Wife will come in handy, I just realized
- 09:14:34: @karrock @blackfonzie By the way, Red the Bum's not the only person who didn't change. Marty's uncle still went to prison.
- 09:17:19: @karrock Then again, that van WAS dead for almost 30 years when Hurley resurrected it. Them things got stayin' power.
- 09:18:35: @ginaharris1 @alitherunner I just run the lights, screw 'em.
- 09:19:32: @blackfonzie @karrock He was hoping to hit him in the head, or maybe knock the gun out of his hand. He had to try SOMETHING.
- 09:21:33: @blackfonzie @karrock Since we're on the subject... "What if we don't succeed?" "We MUST succeed". Huh? You're in a frickin' time machine.
- 09:22:11: @alitherunner @ginaharris1 Same here, there's only one place I really have to be cautious (freeway exit) everywhere else is cool
- 09:23:46: @alitherunner A headlamp is a wonderful thing.
- 09:25:36: @blackfonzie @karrock REAL TINY FONTS
- 09:26:30: @karrock But just think of the hilarity! Can you imagine, an army of Martys doing all sorts of things while Marty plays guitar?
- 09:28:11: @eveblackorwhite Watching Torchwood, when they first showed Eve Myles, I forgot how much I enjoyed the show and had missed it
- 09:28:38: @eveblackorwhite I've only seen the first episode of the mini but I can't imagine ending Torchwood, it's just SO good
- 09:29:47: @karrock Cover design Chang? You came up with that awfully fast.
- 09:32:07: @eveblackorwhite Yup, that's one of the series' strongpoints although I think it's what weighs it down. Situations get worse & worse
- 09:32:20: @eveblackorwhite and realistically since there's no way to fix it, it just gets worse
- 09:33:12: @eveblackorwhite Nope, haven't seen either one
- 09:34:02: @alitherunner I don't worry about the homeless as much as I do stray animals
- 09:36:56: @alitherunner the thing is, you have to do something. People will say "oh you're running where it's dangerous" or "how can you run at 4am"
- 09:37:14: @alitherunner But if you're going to run, you have to do it when you can do it. Sometimes you don't have a choice, so you take precautions.
- 09:37:37: @karrock ah ok I thought you were just really really into BttF :)
- 09:49:14: @ginaharris1 I'm extremely careful, although I do need a flashing red light for my butt.

I'm Back! (where have you heard that before)
That's right, I'm back. Supposedly. It's entirely possible, quite possible, perhaps and tentatively, that there's a rumor about the slight inkling I have to, maybe, write in this blog. Really.
I have this thing about not writing when I'm down. I'm not entirely sure why, I think I just hate reading blogs when they're always negative, always talking about NOT doing the something the blogger is normally talking about doing. In the process, my blog entries have consisted entirely of my Twitter activity.
That is, until about a month ago, when LoudTwitter broke unceremoniously, and without announcement. I suppose it's my fault for not noticing, which just goes to show how much I've thought about this blog for the past month. I do apologize.
Shortly after running the Avenue of the Giants Marathon, I started having pains deep within my left hip joint. My first thought, of course, was to take a short break. I took a few days off, and it happened again. So I thought ok, it's my shoes... I had about 350 miles on my shoes at that point, so I went down to buy new ones. They were out of stock.
I thought of buying elsewhere, but realized that if I had them order the shoes and not run at all until then, it would force me to take a break to heal. I did this, but when the shoes came in, I didn't have the money to pay for them. This pushed it out another week, giving me a full two weeks of rest.
When I started running, BAM, the problem occurred again. I went to the doctor, who gave me an xray. After a week and no call, I called his office only to find him saying there was nothing wrong. It's the same old story. My response to them was, "Great, so I'm on my own again?" The doctor then referred me to an orthopedist. :)
A week later at the orthopedist's office, I found out he doubled as a sports medicine doctor as well. Finally, someone who knew what they were doing! He looked at my x-ray for a while, and had a 30-minute talk with me. He wasn't a runner, but didn't have anything against it. The advice he gave me was:
* Take glucosamine (I'd already started by then)
* Take Aleve regularly in almost prescription strength (doubling OTC dose)
* Stretch religously after runs
* Use the foam roller religiously before AND after runs
So the past week I've run the same schedule as Hal Higdon's Intermediate I marathon training program, albeit with less mileage. Am I in pain? Yes, although a bit less (it was already starting to get less when I saw the orthopedist). I'm not sure doing what the doctor told me has helped yet, because I still feel the same. At the same time, recovery is quicker (I'm usually recovered enough to run the next day).
In faith, I registered for the California International Marathon.
The 18-week Hal Higdon training program starts August 3, but the first week starts with 24 miles. Leading up to August 3, I've been slowly building up my mileage to at least that point. I actually managed to run 19 miles this last week! Pain's been managable, so I really think I can do it.
Meanwhile, I picked up a wireless bluetooth headset.
Along with the Palm Pre, I honestly can't believe I managed without it. Seriously, running with a wire either hanging loose or threaded through the arm & neck of my shirt was just not cutting it. The range is great as well, I can put the Pre in my fanny pack while wearing the headset, and make all adjustments remotely! The headset also works to answer the phone, and while the quality for phone calls isn't the greatest, it does work.
So that's where I'm at. I plan on posting regular workouts starting immediately, and want to build up the habit once again. I'm looking forward to it all!

- 15:30:22: @disneyrunner The account was deleted in the Great Purge.
- 16:05:31: @dollsoflace The point is to have it hang out, so you won't lose the cap. It's not going anywhere or breaking, it's strong. @palm #pre
- 16:13:21: @dollsoflace Yup, hanging out about an inch. I prefer it hanging that far out, otherwise it'd be in the way of the USB plug #pre
- 16:14:25: My son's playing the Transformers game (from the 1st movie). Prime keeps telling him to go to the landing site but he's too busy
- 16:14:31: blowing stuff up.
- 16:21:21: @TLM26 I was just on FB, my sister's childhood friend & her sister ran the half. I ran 5 today. ;)
- 16:23:09: @TLM26 I also took a picture of ducks crossing the road, nothing but excitement here today. Wish I was at SFM tho.
- 17:09:10: @MacStainless You're driving me nuts with your #fb tweets when I can't get #fb to work. :(
- 17:10:59: @MacStainless I thought I did that, but I'll do it again.
- 17:14:33: Test testy test testes. Test. #fb
- 17:20:23: @MacStainless Nope, still doesn't work. It's not like my Twitter profile is private, I'm wide open :)
- 17:21:52: @disneyrunner active rest is your friend!
- 17:24:33: @MacStainless I've tried it both with it disabled and with it removed. I just removed it before I removed/reinstalled selective
- 17:24:57: @MacStainless Be sure settings is unchecked? You mean "update streams"?
- 17:30:01: Test. #fb
- 17:32:11: @macstainless That's odd. I unchecked "update streams". Now when I go back in there, that option's not there, but "post one line" is there
- 17:32:22: TEST. #fb
- 17:38:17: @quotidianlight Hey I can always be relied upon for a laugh. :)
- 17:40:37: test #fb
- 17:46:34: @alroadrunn3r It's the next step after barefoot running
- 18:02:41: @turtlescanrun When I did mine, I did both. I drank water at aid stations and had Cytomax in my bottle
- 18:07:17: @turtlescanrun Hard to tell, I finished in 6:21. ;) I'm not sure how well it helped but I stayed hydrated and it tasted good.
- 18:07:39: @turtlescanrun It claims to reduce lactic acid buildup which is probably fine in a sub-3 marathoner, not so sure if it did diddly for me
- 18:08:57: @kelownagurl hey!
- 18:10:47: test #fb
- 18:11:18: @kelownagurl I'm doing well, managed to run 22 miles this week. Fighting with Facebook, trying to get selective twitter to work.
- 18:14:11: @turtlescanrun Every mile! That's quite a lot
- 18:14:34: @kelownagurl Eating/weight is a bust at present, back at 180. It seems that if I fail for one day I gain it all back
- 18:14:55: @kelownagurl selective twitter is a facebook app that lets you send twitter updates by putting #fb at the end of your tweets
- 18:15:03: @kelownagurl It seems to work for everyone but me
- 18:17:05: @kelownagurl Which is where selective twitter comes in. You can send it there if you want, and not send if you don't want.
- 18:17:09: test #fb
- 18:18:56: @kelownagurl It was more like two days but still. How does a person gain 6 pounds in 2 days? really. :)
- 18:19:14: @kelownagurl But I'm running more now so hopefully it'll help.
- 18:21:53: @kelownagurl at least I'm not in total depression mode again
- 18:25:10: @kelownagurl I'm surprised how my mood is destroyed when I've gained weight sometimes
- 18:30:19: @turtlescanrun On my long runs last year I cached my own water at the aid station intervals. I had water left over.
- 19:37:19: @eveblackorwhite heyy! :)
- 19:39:27: I'm watching this show called Dating in the Dark. I normally don't watch shows like this, but the Tivo recorded it. So what the heck.
- 19:47:53: COUGAR TOWN?!?!?! What the hell?
- 19:49:05: @krauser I just watched Tron a few hours ago, amazing how much OLDER Jeff Bridges is/looks
- 19:50:02: @krauser Boxleitner doesn't look that much older to me, it's not as big a difference
- 19:53:47: @alitherunner Neither. I'm gassy.
- 19:55:43: @alitherunner 3yo daughter also said my bellybutton disappeared. It was under the table.
- 19:56:36: @wowzurz I noticed that my alarm sounds are quieter, they don't wake me up anymore. I don't send smileys so I hadn't noticed. #pre
- 20:01:21: @alitherunner great job!
- 20:03:50: @alitherunner I feel the same way. I'm still running tentatively, slower, but glad to be out there.
- 20:07:06: @alitherunner I'm also still in pain here & there, but I managed to run 22 miles this week. More running days helped obviously.
- 20:11:32: @alitherunner I miscounted! It was 19 miles. :)
- 20:13:20: @gchance the first training week is 24... so next week I plan on 21. The first marathon training is the week after.
- 20:14:56: @alitherunner what are you training for?
- 20:17:54: @alitherunner good place to be in december, that's for sure
- 20:18:27: @alitherunner I may have a few training partners this time around, at least once a week. A couple people are wanting to run with me
- 20:18:43: @alitherunner but since they aren't training, once I start extending out my mileage they won't be joining me hehehe
- 20:19:22: @alitherunner Also one of my backpacking friends came back from deployment to announce no backpacking this yr bc he's doing a century ride
- 20:23:18: @alitherunner I do understand his dilemma. When you do long training runs or rides on Saturdays it's hard to go hiking all weekend
- 20:23:46: @alitherunner Forget RnR, do the elvis run! :)
