This afternoon I went to the doctor to make sure my ankle is doing ok.
I went in there, and he looked at my foot. He felt the sore spot, then moved it up, down, left, right, around. Told me to expect some bruising, but that it doesn't look broken, just a strain.
Then he told me what I already knew about and was doing: RICE. Rest, Ice, Compress, Elevate. Get an ace bandage. Was I taking any anti-inflammatories? I told him Aleve, along with a Glucosamine/Chondroitin/MSM supplement and my Mega Men Sport. He nodded his head, said take it easy until it heals.
5 minutes after he walked in the door, I was on my way. So the good news is nothing's broken, but 5 minutes? He didn't even comment on the fact that my blood pressure was 142/70. I had high blood pressure before losing weight, should I freak out over it?
Anyway, the plan is to cross train the next week and stay off it as much as I can, RICE, and plan on running again next Wednesday.

CIM Training Week 4, Day 6: INJURY! NOOOO!
GROUNDED!!! No running for me for a while.
Today was to be a 6-mile race pace (~9 min/mi) run. Like last week, I brought my son so he could ride his bike, and I also went out with my pastor.
Rob, my pastor, has been having troubles with his back, and said that he can usually avoid it from hurting if he runs 4 miles or less. So the plan was to run the 4 miles, then head back out on the path another mile & back, making 6 total.
After the 4, my son decided he was through. Rob lives three blocks from the bike path, and offered to let Gregory go with him until I got back. Gregory was fine with it, so they walked off while I started on the final two.
Almost immediately after starting, I twisted my ankle on the edge of the paved path and went down. Hard.
It flat-out knocked the wind out of me. I've fallen down quite a bit, but the impact made me feel like passing out. It wasn't like the other falls I've had, where you sort of slide and roll, this time it was more like falling straight down onto my knees.
I drove back to Rob's house, got cleaned up, and headed home with my son. Shortly thereafter we needed to go to a meeting at the church. At the meeting, I looked down at my feet and saw my ankle. It's the one on the right.
It had swollen up to about three times its size! After ice & elevation this evening, the swelling's gone down, but I'm not running for a little while. I'm certainly not doing my scheduled 11-mile long run tomorrow. I'm keeping an eye on it, but don't think anything's broken or torn. I just need to get this thing healed up.

CIM Training Week 4, Day 4: 3 miles easy
Today was one of those days where you just feel... fat. Yes, I had a fat day. So then this evening, someone posted this picture to Facebook. That's me in the red t-shirt in the front row.
It really brought things into perspective! Yes, I'm up in weight from my lowest, but my, how far I've come. The cabin we stayed at is called Hilltop, named appropriately because it's a hike up a hill to get there. Up, down, up, down, I used to have a HECK of a time. A few years ago, I went on a 3-mile run with my pastor up the same hills.
Speaking of 3-milers, today was another easy one. Believe me, I was ready for easy,, after yesterday's intervals!
Splits
Mile 1: 9:20
Mile 2: 9:14
Mile 3: 9:57
Walked the last .2 miles back to work. 3 miles total, 28:18, 9:30/mi average pace, 402 calories burned.

CIM Training Week 4, Day 3: 6 miles (intervals)
Today's intervals killed me. I'm now clinically dead. It's not so bad, reanimation's occurred, and aside from an insatiable appetite for human brains, I think I'm good.
10 minute warmup, 12x400m (90s rest), 10 minute cooldown
Intervals
1: 7:48/mi
2: 7:54/mi
3: 7:57/mi
4: 8:21/mi
5: 9:00/mi
6: 8:15/mi
7: 8:29/mi
8: 8:48/mi
9: 10:35/mi
10: 8:32/mi
11: 9:45/mi
12: 9:11/mi
Obviously I got worn down pretty badly towards the end. Part of my problem was I ran over the freeway, I probably should have stayed on the one side, avoided traffic & the overpasses, and backtracked. Still, they did their job and alternated high/low heart rates.
I did this workout last year in preparation for the last marathon, didn't go over the freeway, and stayed below 8 minutes per mile. I forget if I'll be doing this workout again before December, but if I do, I'll stick to the one side.
6.11 miles, 1:04:11, 10:30/mi, 846 calories burned.

CIM Training Week 4, Day 2: 3 miles
You may have noticed that so far my Tuesday and Thursday runs have been 3 miles. This is part of Hal Higdon's Intermediate I program, of course. He specifies that they should be easy runs as well, but I've been having a hard time not running them at race pace. The runs that are to be done at race pace are the longer, Saturday runs, but I feel inclined to run these that pace as well. As the program progresses, I might feel differently.

Mile 2: 8:39
Mile 3: 8:56

I walked the last .19 mi back to work.

CIM Training Week 4, Day 1: Cross Training
Overall, today was a great day. At the gym, I got to watch the end of I Dream of Jeanie and an episode of The Cosby Show, all while listening to Pandora. The best part is I didn't have to hear the ladies on the elliptical machines next to me!
Nah, that's rude. I did have a good workout though. 45 minutes, 489 calories burned.

CIM Training Week 3, Day 7: 6 miles
Today a 6 mile long run, which doesn't seem long at all to me. It's considered long, however, because it's in the "long run" spot in training, and gives a bit of a break before extending mileage next week.
I ran my normal 5 mile route, but extended it by taking a quick side trip for a half-mile out. Round trip, that added a mile onto the route.
I took it pretty easy and felt great the entire time.
Splits
Mile 1: 10:08
Mile 2: 9:56
Mile 3: 10:18
Mile 4: 10:03
Mile 5: 10:14
Mile 6: 10:23
6 miles, 1:01.05, 10:12/mi, 656 calories burned
Thus ends Week 3 of CIM training. 22 miles this week, next week I'll be up to 29.

CIM Training Week 3, Day 6: 5 miles
Today was a wonderful, wonderful run. On paper, it was supposed to be 5 miles at race pace, but I really do think I should have started slower. What made it wonderful though, was the fact that my 7-year-old son Gregory rode his bike while I ran.
We went out on the Yuba City bike trail, a choice I made so he wouldn't be riding his bike on busy streets.
There was also a surprising number of runners out there. As I started, a young husband & wife headed out, and shortly thereafter, three women were running as well. On the way back, there was a large group of about 20 women walking the trail. So it was pretty neat. Note the slower Mile 3, where I walked a bit.
Splits
Mile 1: 8:47
Mile 2: 9:04
Mile 3: 9:23
Mile 4: 10:20
Mile 5: 9:57
5 miles, 47:34, 9:32/mi average, 589 calories burned.
As I ran to the car, who do I see but Steve Davis from my church! He was out with a couple friends on a recumbent bike. He said he'd only been riding for a few weeks, but one of the people he was with was swearing up and down about how it was better than a standard bike for older folk. While they looked like interesting bikes to ride, I'm not entirely sure the workout would be as good, especially on any terrain other than flatland.
As we pulled out, I talked to the guy from the married couple we'd seen earlier. He was running at a much faster pace than I was (8:30-8:45), and said he was training for a half marathon in Washington. His name was Ray, and we talked a bit about running.
This was certainly one of the better runs I've had. I think I'm going to start bringing Gregory out for my Saturday race-pace runs, he had a blast. I did, too.

CIM Training Week 3, Day 4: 3 miles
It's a gusty, blusty day, I must say!
It's always that first mile. Is it me, or does the wind seem to blow eastwardly more often than not? And sure enough, my first mile from work is always to the east. At least today I was running 3 miles and turned at the 1-mile point instead of 2, right?
Ah well, enough complaining.
Splits
Mile 1: 9:14.19
Mile 2: 9:09.64
Mile 3: 9:12.13
3 miles, 27:35, 9:12 average pace, 387 calories burned. Walked the last .2 miles back to work as cooldown.

CIM Training Week 3, Day 3: Intervals/5 miles
Tonight on the way home from the store, I drove off a potential 20-mile route for when my long runs get longer. My first 20-miler's going to be in November, and I want to make sure I have the route down before I head out.
Anyway, I didn't drive far enough because in the end it was only 17 miles, but once I got home I double-checked MapMyRun.com, and have the route down now. It seems so long when driving! This time around, instead of going towards Marysville and then Yuba City for a loop before heading back, I'll be making a wide loop through Olivehurst, across to Plumas Lake, out by Sleep Train Amphitheater, and back via Forty Mile Road. It's pretty rural out there, but the way I plotted it, Walgreen's is right smack in the middle for a potty break & water refill. I hope to drive the route a few more times before actually running it.
Anyway, today was to be a 5-miler, of which I ran intervals in the middle of. The intervals were 4 x (3 min hard/3 min easy). I did a 10-minute warmup, with cooldown being the rest of the route back to work.
Intervals
1: 8:13/mi
2: 7:58/mi
3: 8:40/mi
4: 8:41/mi
Total 5.35 miles, 10:47/mi average overall, 57:41, 737 calories burned.
For the long run in November, I'm still undecided as to whether I'm going to cache water or bring a hydration pack. I have a 3L sleeve, but my backpack is for hiking, not for running, and gets a bit bulky. So I'd have to buy a Camelbak if I went that route.
Finally, in case you're interested, I took a picture of my visual training log. It's not much other than a printout of Hal Higdon's Intermediate I schedule, but on my cubicle wall at work, it really gives me a visual representation of where I am in my training.
I did the same thing during marathon training last time around, and it really kept me going each morning when I'd glance up and see it. Do what works, right?

Today I felt like I was FLYING! Obviously I wasn't, but compared to what my pace was in the not-to-distant past, I certainly was. I ran 3 miles today, then walked the last .18 mi back to work as a cooldown.
Splits
Mile 1: 8:40
Mile 2: 8:48
Mile 3: 8:53
3 miles, 8:47/mi average pace, 26:21 total. 408 calories burned.

CIM Training Week 2, Day 7: 9 miles
After my run today, we were driving across the 10th Street Bridge around 10:30am. When we approached Plumas Street, we saw a guy running in front of us. That alone wouldn't be too interesting, but this guy made my morning. He was of largish build, he could have been a bodybuilder but it was hard to tell, because he was wearing a 20 or 30 pound weight vest! When we crossed Plumas Street, I looked over to see him walking.
We went through the rest of our day, went to church, took my mom to lunch. Went to the movie theater in the afternoon and saw The Time Traveler's Wife, then headed home around 6:30.
On the way back across the 10th Street Bridge, I saw a guy of largish build, wearing a 20 or 30 pound weight vest, walking across the bridge. Sure enough, it was the same guy! So either he split two separate workouts, or he was out there for 7 hours with his weight vest. I wanted to stop, but he was in the middle of the bridge, so there was no way to pull over and say something.
The nearest I can figure is he was likely training for an ultramarathon. Whatever the case, I was impressed! It made my run seem small.
Speaking of my run, it turned out pretty well.
I slowed down quite a bit, which is what I was supposed to do, but ended up taking a longish break in the middle when I took a picture of some horses.
The plan there was to just take a quick picture of them & email to Twitter, but I only had phone access out there. That was a bummer, if I take that route on my long runs there'll be less sharing along the way. Meanwhile, I ended up taking a longish break fiddling with my phone. Not that I minded, of course. You know me and that lazy streak!
Taking video along the way slowed me down a tad as well, but not near as much.

CIM Training Week 2, Day 6: 5 miles
Today was an easy 5 miles, and I noticed a couple things.
First, it looks like my easy pace is becoming faster. This is good, of course, because that means I'll be able to run faster for a longer period of time.
The second thing, which isn't so great, is that after this morning's run and successive daily activities, I'm completely exhausted. It's only 6pm, and I feel like going to bed! I think the key here is that it's essential for me to eat prior to running.
I experienced this same thing after last Sunday's 8-miler, when again I didn't eat before it. I was exhausted then as well, and ended up just lounging around the campsite the rest of the day.
So anyway, the run itself was fabulous. I ran at 6am, and the weather was darn near perfect: 55 degrees with a slight breeze. If all runs were that way, I'd never have a bad one!

Eddie Izzard (CIM Training Week 2, Day 5: REST)
It's rest day! I did no exercise whatsoever today, which was fun, great fun. :)
On Twitter, I used to follow quite a few celebrities. If I think they're funny, and say funny or interesting things on Twitter, I'll follow. If not, they're gone. This is what happened when they all started playing a barely funny game among each other one night.
You may or may not have heard of him, but one of these celebrity Twitter casualties was @eddieizzard. Eddie Izzard is a British comedian who's got a large following over there, but not near as much here. I was aware of him because of peoples' mentions online, but had never seen any of his work until he starred a few years ago on the FX show, The Riches, which was a great, unique show. Like most great, unique shows, it was cancelled before its time.
On Twitter, he was one of the first people I followed. Unlike most celebrities, he seemed to be pretty down to earth. He posted about visiting with his father, including pictures, and I thought that was neat. Then the little game happened, and I stopped following.
Sure he's a bit hard to handle if you're not used to, but he is pretty funny. He's also a bit overweight, as evidenced by the above picture.
So today I was on Twitter, and as they tend to do, someone did a retweet from Eddie Izzard, which means they reposted what he had posted:
This intrigued me. 17th marathon? Tomorrow's his 18th? Eddie Izzard? The guy in the above picture?
Come to find out, there's a charity in England loosely connected to Comic Relief called Sport Relief, and Eddie Izzard is running to support the cause. Not just running, but he's running 30 marathons in 30 days.
Things like this are pretty common in the running world, of course, but typically they're done by people who are known for that sort of thing. Dean Karnazes, for example, is famous for being the "Ultramarathon Man", who a few years ago famously ran 50 marathons in 50 states, in 50 days. He called it 50-50-50, made a video, and wrote a book. The thing is, Dean Karnazes trains all night every night and has about 8% body fat.
Eddie Izzard, on the other hand, is like many of us runners. He's a bit overweight, in his mid-40s, yet is out there getting it done. Not only is he getting it done, but he's doing very well at it. Remember earlier, I mentioned that he's currently on his 17th marathon distance. He's on his way across the UK, and when he's done, he will have covered well over 1000 miles.
I am truly awed by this. Not only is he raising money for charity, but he's proving that yes, a middle aged, slightly overweight runner can get it done.
We're all in this together. Let's go for a run.

CIM Training Week 2, Day 4: 4 miles
Yesterday's intervals ended up shortening what was supposed to be a 5-mile run down to 4 miles. Today was scheduled to be 3 miles easy, but I ran 4 miles instead to make up the extra mile missed yesterday. As far as the image is concerned, I had been using a different mode in Sporttracks that would allow me to hide the cooldown walk at the end of my run, but in the process the mile splits weren't obvious. So I'm going back to the old style.
Splits
Mile 1: 9:40
Mile 2: 9:45
Mile 3: 10:41
Mile 4: 11:00
I sort of did a lame walk/run/jog the 3/4 of a mile after mile 4. Also for some reason, the heat really affected me more than it did yesterday. It was probably because of residual fatigue from the intervals. 4 miles, 620 calories burned after the walk.

- 08:52:16: Why is it, I can upload 500 pictures to Flickr, all linked from FB, yet nobody seems to notice until I upload *ONE* picture direct to FB?
- 08:52:43: Why, what is this link you are referring to, I do not understand, it is not on the book of face. I cannot click on it. Oh look, puppies!

- 12:34:24: Finished checking/changing signature files, it only took two hours. The temp went from 75 to 87 in that time. So now I can run.
